Is Saint Lucia safe to visit?

Saint Lucia

Most resort and honeymoon visitors have no trouble, and the US rates Saint Lucia Level 2. But InSight Crime counts 70 homicides in 2025 and 77 in 2024, about 39 per 100,000, mostly gang shootings, and resort guests have been robbed and assaulted. Steep roads, scams and hurricanes are the other risks.

Is Saint Lucia safe to visit?

For a typical resort holiday, usually yes. The US State Department rates Saint Lucia Level 2, "exercise increased caution", for crime alone, and most of the island's visitors (honeymooners, divers, cruise passengers) leave without any trouble.

The murder rate is the problem. InSight Crime counts 70 homicide victims in 2025 and 77 in 2024. On an island of about 180,000 people, that is about 39 per 100,000, higher than Trinidad and Tobago (about 27) or Jamaica (about 24) and more than twice the rate in Barbados. Small numbers can swing a lot, so we checked the longer run: UNODC rates have been between 37 and 39 every year since 2021. We score Saint Lucia 56.

Who is at risk of violent crime

Most killings are gang shootings among young local men, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary describes a continuing serious risk of gun homicides, some in public places. Recent cases were in residential areas of Castries, the Palmiste area of Soufrière, Dennery and Micoud, not in the hotel strips.

Visitors are not immune, though. The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary says foreigners, including Americans, have been victims of armed robbery, assault, burglary and rape, that guests at resorts have been targeted, and that some US citizens have been killed. It also warns that police response is slower than at home. Most incidents fit a pattern: villas and rooms without good locks, empty beaches and roads at night, and big parties.

Choose accommodation with secure doors, grilles or a guard, lock balcony doors at night, and keep valuables in the safe. The FCDO says the same applies to yachts at anchor in Rodney Bay or Marigot Bay.

Petty crime, vendors and festivals

The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary says petty crime such as bag snatching and pickpocketing is common in tourist areas, and warns of overcharging, scams and aggressive vendors. Expect beach vendors and unofficial guides at popular beaches, markets and viewpoints. A firm "no thanks" usually works; most sites have tourist police if it does not.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says robberies and opportunistic crime rise around the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival in May and Carnival in July. Watch your drink, carry little cash, and plan your ride home before the night starts. Street parties such as the Friday night event in Gros Islet are best done with a group.

Roads and getting around

The police counted 20 road deaths in 2024, about 11 per 100,000, and 10 by September 2025. WHO's modelled 2019 estimate of 29.8 is much higher, but the police count is the better guide. In late 2025 and early 2026 Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre repeatedly condemned speeding and reckless overtaking after a run of fatal crashes.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary describes steep, narrow rural roads with hairpin bends, blind corners and potholes, drivers who do not signal, pedestrians in the road, and minibus drivers who often speed. Crashes are common on the east coast road from Hewanorra airport, which is the long transfer most visitors take, so pre-book a reputable transfer rather than a cheap minibus. If you drive, you need a temporary permit (US$20 or EC$54), and you should not stop if flagged down by pedestrians.

Hurricanes, landslides and the volcano next door

Saint Lucia is mountainous and sits on the hurricane track. Hurricane Tomas in October 2010 dropped 21 to 25 inches of rain in about a day, triggering landslides that swept away houses and parts of the main highway. The National Hurricane Center counts 8 deaths and US$336 million of damage. Elsa in 2021 cut power to about 90% of homes, and Beryl in 2024 brought gusts of 72 knots at Hewanorra and about US$2 million of damage.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary adds that after a storm, power, water and flights can be disrupted even at resorts, and that the 2021 eruption of La Soufrière on nearby St Vincent sent ash over the island.

Health care

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says the main government hospital can deal with many problems but serious cases may need evacuation, and treatment is expensive. Check private clinics' payment rules before treatment; Tapion Hospital does not accept foreign travel insurance. Carry a copy of prescriptions for any controlled medicines, and use repellent against dengue.
