Is Tajikistan safe to visit?

Tajikistan

Crime against visitors is low, and most trips to Dushanbe, the Fann Mountains and the Pamir Highway go smoothly. The US rates Tajikistan Level 2 and says reconsider travel to the Afghan border and Gorno-Badakhshan. Mountain roads, landmines, earthquakes and basic medical care are the other risks.

Is Tajikistan safe to visit?

Yes, with care about where you go. Tajikistan has very little street crime, and most visitors to Dushanbe, Khujand and the Fann Mountains have no trouble. The risks are the borders and the mountains. The US rates the country Level 2 for terrorism and landmines and says reconsider travel to the Afghan border and to Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO), the region the Pamir Highway crosses. We score Tajikistan 66, below Uzbekistan (74) and close to Kyrgyzstan.

How risky is the Afghan border?

The border with Afghanistan follows the Panj river, and the Pamir Highway runs beside it for long stretches. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says armed criminal and terrorist groups occasionally cross, mainly at night. In November 2025 five Chinese nationals were killed in two separate cross-border attacks, one in Shamsiddin Shohon district of Khatlon and one in Darvoz in GBAO. On 13 August 2026 a local resident in Darvoz was killed by a stray bullet during fighting on the Afghan side.

Terrorism has reached visitors before. On 29 July 2018 five men ran a group of seven Western cyclists off the road near Danghara, south-east of Dushanbe, and attacked them with knives, killing four, including two Americans. ISIS claimed the attack; the government blamed the opposition Islamic Renaissance Party, according to the US State Department. The FCDO says terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks and that in March 2024 the authorities disrupted a plot to poison Nowruz celebrations in Vahdat. Take extra care at Nowruz, Independence Day and New Year.

GBAO has its own tension. The FCDO reports serious disturbances in 2021 and violent clashes in and around Khorog since 2022, with casualties, and roads in Khorog and Rushan are sometimes closed. You need a GBAO permit, and border guards check it.

The Kyrgyz border, then and now

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan fought twice over disputed sections of their border in the Fergana Valley. Fighting that began on 28 April 2021 near a water intake by the Kyrgyz village of Kok-Tash lasted two days and left 54 people dead. From 14 to 17 September 2022 the two armies fought with artillery and drones; at least 81 Tajik and 63 Kyrgyz citizens were killed, and about 140,000 Kyrgyz residents were evacuated. Presidents Emomali Rahmon and Sadyr Japarov signed a border treaty in Bishkek on 13 March 2025. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says there have been no clashes since, but unexploded ordnance remains.

Roads, landmines and mountains

Road numbers differ widely by source. WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 13.9 road deaths per 100,000 people in 2021, the figure we score on, but police reported only 395 deaths that year, less than a third of WHO's modelled 1,352. Expect potholed roads, poor lighting, old cars and passes that close for snow, avalanches or floods. The Anzob tunnel road between Dushanbe and Khujand is dangerous in winter. US embassy staff may not drive between cities at night, a good rule to copy.

Landmines and cluster munitions lie along the Afghan and Uzbek borders, in the Vakhsh and Rasht valleys and in the Romit hiking area, according to the US. Never cross red-and-white tape or walk on road shoulders in these areas.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says earthquakes are a risk across the country, particularly in GBAO. USGS recorded a magnitude 7.2 earthquake west of Murghob on 7 December 2015 and a 6.9 on 23 February 2023. Treks are remote, phone coverage is poor and mountain rescue is run by volunteers with little equipment.

Health and medical care

WHO certified Tajikistan malaria-free in 2023. The main risks are food and water, rabies (CDC says rabid dogs are common) and altitude. Medical care is basic, you may need to pay cash for medicines, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns that Western-brand drugs may be counterfeit, so bring what you need. Ambulance operators on 03 or 103 usually speak only Tajik and Russian. Dust storms make the air poor in Dushanbe and Khatlon. Buy insurance that covers evacuation and high-altitude trekking.

How we scored it

Violent crime (90) is the strongest factor, on UNODC's 2020 rate and the statistics agency's 2024 count, both from a state that controls information tightly. Health (50) and natural hazards (55) are the weakest, with road safety (58, on WHO's 2021 estimate of 13.9 per 100,000) close behind, and conflict (62) is held down by the Afghan border and GBAO. Confidence is low because crime and road data are old or disputed.
