Is Kyrgyzstan safe to visit?

Kyrgyzstan

A good choice for trekkers and road-trippers: the US rates Kyrgyzstan Level 1 and violent crime against visitors is uncommon. The real risks are the roads, which killed about 900 people in 2025, remote mountains with little rescue, poorly equipped hospitals, street theft in Bishkek and a high earthquake risk.

Is Kyrgyzstan safe to visit?

Yes. The US rates Kyrgyzstan Level 1 and calls it "generally a safe destination", and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against travel to no part of the country. Violent crime is low, at 1.75 Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary people in 2020 (UNODC). What hurts visitors more often is the road, the mountains and a hospital system you do not want to rely on. We score Kyrgyzstan 70, below Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan (both 74) and above Tajikistan (66).

UNODC has no figure after 2020, but the National Statistical Committee's own count is steady: 161 murders and attempted murders were registered in 2025, against 172 in 2020, or about 2.2 per 100,000 people including attempts. Kyrgyzstan's crime statistics are dominated by fraud, which has surged. Murders, though, fell by 11.9% year on year in the first quarter of 2026, according to official figures reported by 24.kg.

Roads are the main danger

Police reported 900 road deaths in 2025, about 12 per 100,000 people. The first quarter of 2026 was worse again, with 148 killed, up 28.7%. The WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary are similar: 13.3 per 100,000 in 2021, the figure we score on for all countries, and 12.7 in 2019. All three put Kyrgyzstan in the middle of our road scale, about level with Kazakhstan.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary describes many roads as poorly lit and badly maintained, with roadworks and damage often unsigned and pedestrians who pay little attention to traffic. Mountain passes close with snow in winter, avalanches and landslides block roads in spring, and fuel, especially diesel, is scarce in rural areas. Practical rules:

  • Drive in daylight on long trips and stick to main roads.
  • Do not pick up hitchhikers; the FCDO says drivers have been robbed by them.
  • Any alcohol in your blood can cost you a fine and your licence for a year.
  • Avoid local minibuses where you can; they are poorly maintained and pickpockets work them.

Mountains, earthquakes and medical care

Many visitors come to trek, ride or camp in the mountains, and that is where the risk lies. Weather turns quickly, snow can fall at altitude in summer, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns of avalanches, landslides and rockfall. Mountain rescue is run by volunteers with limited equipment (+996 312 651 404), and in remote valleys phone coverage may be nil. Use a reputable agency and never trek alone.

The FCDO rates the earthquake risk as high and says tremors are frequent. USGS recorded a magnitude 6.7 earthquake in the south on 5 October 2008 and a 6.4 in 2016.

Health care is the weak point. The FCDO says hospitals are often badly equipped and unhygienic, sterile equipment cannot be assumed, especially in rural areas, and visitors should avoid all but basic or essential treatment in an emergency. CDC says rabid dogs are common, so ask a travel clinic about rabies vaccination for long rural trips; it also lists tick-borne encephalitis for hikers. There have been anthrax cases in the south. The FCDO says air quality in Bishkek has deteriorated, especially in winter, when power cuts are also frequent.

The border with Tajikistan and the politics

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan fought over disputed border sections twice. Clashes that began on 28 April 2021 near the village of Kok-Tash lasted two days and killed 54 people. From 14 to 17 September 2022 about 150 people died on both sides, and nearly 140,000 Kyrgyz residents were evacuated. Presidents Sadyr Japarov and Emomali Rahmon signed a border treaty in Bishkek on 13 March 2025, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says there have been no clashes since. It still warns of possible unexploded ordnance and mines in the Batken region.

Demonstrations are common in Bishkek and usually peaceful, but on 17 and 18 May 2024 protests against South Asian migrant workers and students left 41 people injured. The FCDO now says terrorist attacks "cannot be ruled out"; in August 2025 it had said terrorists were likely to try. Carry your passport or a notarised copy, as police can detain you without one. Two rules catch visitors out: bringing in e-cigarettes or vaping liquid is illegal and customs will confiscate them, and drinking alcohol in public can bring a 1,000 som fine. Pay any traffic fine at a payment terminal or bank, never in cash to an officer.

How we scored it

Violent crime (86) and conflict (78) are the strongest factors, on UNODC's 2020 Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary and steady national counts up to 2025. Health (55) is the weakest, followed by natural hazards (58) and road safety (62), where national and WHO figures agree.

Questions people ask

Is Bishkek safe for tourists?

Generally yes, with big-city care. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns of bag-snatching and mugging, especially at night, and of pickpockets at Osh Bazaar and on minibuses. Use a licensed pre-ordered taxi service instead of flagging cars down, keep money out of sight at exchange offices, and watch your drink in clubs.

Is it safe to trek in Kyrgyzstan?

Yes, if you prepare for remoteness. Weather changes fast, snow can fall in summer at altitude, avalanches and rockfall are common, and phone coverage is patchy. The mountain rescue service is run by volunteers with limited equipment. Use a reputable agency, do not trek alone, tell someone your route and buy insurance that covers high-altitude rescue.

Is the border with Tajikistan safe now?

Calmer than at any time in years. After deadly clashes in April 2021 and September 2022, the two presidents signed a border treaty on 13 March 2025, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says there have been no clashes since. Unexploded ordnance and mines may remain in the Batken region, crossings can close at short notice, and you should use only official border posts.

Do I need to carry my passport in Kyrgyzstan?

Yes. You must carry your passport or a notarised copy at all times, and police can arrest you without it. Police also raid bars and clubs for drugs; stay calm and show ID. Pay traffic fines at a terminal or bank, not in cash to an officer.

Is it safe to drive in Kyrgyzstan?

It is demanding. Police counted 900 road deaths in 2025, roads outside Bishkek are often unlit and badly maintained, passes close with snow in winter and fuel is scarce in rural areas. A UK licence is valid for 30 days, after which you need a 1968 International Driving Permit. Any alcohol in your blood is an offence. Do not pick up hitchhikers.
