Is FreeReels safe?
FreeReels
FreeReels, the ad-supported sister of DramaWave from Singapore's Skywork AI, has no known breach or regulator action. But its Google Play listing says it is always free while it sells VIP plans, its policy shares data with ad partners and scans installed apps, and Apple rates it 13+ although its terms say 18.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Privacy30% of score
40 out of 100, WeakApple's label lists identifiers as used to track you; Google Play says nothing is shared. The July 2026 policy shares device IDs and usage with Firebase and AppsFlyer and with advertisers, reads the clipboard for marketing, and collects installed-app data through a fraud SDK.
Security30% of score
50 out of 100, WeakNo breach of FreeReels user data was found. The policy says user data is encrypted at rest and in transit with TLS 1.2 and that systems are tested for vulnerabilities. Payments run through Apple or Google; we found no two-step login or bug bounty, and support is a Gmail address.
Transparency and control15% of score
39 out of 100, PoorAccount deletion is in the app (Profile, Setting, Delete account) and the policy is dated. But Google Play calls the app "always free" with "no subscriptions" while it sells VIP plans, the terms date from 2024, payments are final, and disputes go to arbitration in Singapore.
Scams and harmful content15% of score
44 out of 100, WeakApple rates FreeReels 13+ for infrequent mature themes, realistic violence, profanity and horror, while its terms say the service is not for under-18s without a parent's consent. Apple lists user-generated content and social features, and the free model fills the app with third-party ads.
Regulatory record10% of score
88 out of 100, ExcellentWe found no privacy or consumer-protection fine or order against FreeReels, and no UK Advertising Standards Authority ruling naming it. The ASA's February 2026 ruling against sister app DramaWave is context only. Few regulators have looked at short-drama apps yet.
Is FreeReels safe?
FreeReels works, we found no breach, and no regulator has acted against it. The catch is what pays for the free episodes. We score it 48/100, level with its sister app DramaWave (48) and a little below ReelShort (51). Its policy shares device and usage data with ad and analytics partners, asks to read your clipboard for marketing, and scans the list of installed apps. Apple rates it 13+ even though its own terms are written for adults.
FreeReels is one of the largest apps in the genre on Android, with more than 100 million Google Play downloads and 4.7 stars from about 2 million reviews. On the iPhone it is called DramaReels and is smaller: about 42,000 US ratings, and it was not in Apple's US top 200 entertainment charts when we checked in October 2026. It ranked No. 36 among free entertainment apps in Indonesia and No. 52 in the Philippines, the kind of markets the free model targets.
Who makes FreeReels
The operator and data controller is Skywork AI Pte. Ltd., at 2 Science Park Drive in Singapore. Skywork also sells DramaWave, the newer HotDrama and the StarMaker karaoke app. Kunlun Tech, the Chinese internet group behind Skywork, names DramaWave among its products on its website but does not mention FreeReels. The split between the apps is commercial: DramaWave sells weekly VIP plans, while FreeReels shows ads.
The privacy policy says data may be moved to countries where Skywork's affiliates are based, without naming them, and support runs through a Gmail address ([email protected]). A Gmail support channel makes fake "FreeReels support" emails harder to tell apart from the real thing.
Is FreeReels actually free?
Partly. The Google Play description promises "Always free to access — no subscriptions, no limits." The same listing shows in-app purchases from $0.99 to $299.99 per item. On the US App Store, DramaReels sells VIP memberships at $19.99, $36.99 and $119.99, coin packs at $4.99 and $14.99, and ten "tickets" for $5.99. The terms describe free trials that turn into paid plans unless cancelled 24 hours before they end, and subscriptions that renew until you stop them.
If you buy, the rules are the genre's usual ones. All payments are "final and non-refundable, except as required by applicable law", store refunds go through Apple or Google, and disputes go to the Singapore International Arbitration Centre with a class-action waiver. The terms were last dated 31 October 2024, almost two years before the privacy policy.
What FreeReels collects
The store labels and the policy tell different stories. Apple's label says identifiers are used to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and that coarse location, name, email and device and user IDs are linked to you. Google Play's section says FreeReels shares no data with other companies.
The privacy policy, effective 21 July 2026 for US users, describes more than either label:
- device identifiers and usage data, including where you watch, go to Firebase and AppsFlyer;
- information is shared with advertisers and measurement firms, and outside ad networks serve ads in the app with their own tracking;
- with your permission, the app reads the clipboard when you copy or paste and uses it "to enable marketing and promotions";
- a fraud-prevention SDK collects information about installed apps to check whether the phone is rooted or emulated;
- calendar access can be requested for reminders, including subscription renewals.
On security the policy is more specific than most rivals: it says user data is encrypted at rest and in transit with TLS 1.2, that code is reviewed and that systems are tested for vulnerabilities. Unlike DramaWave and HotDrama, the FreeReels policy we read has no section on AI face features.
Is FreeReels OK for teenagers?
FreeReels' terms say the service "is not for persons under the age of 18" without a parent's consent, and the privacy policy says it is not directed at under-18s. Apple rates it 13+, listing infrequent cartoon and realistic violence, profanity, mature or suggestive themes and horror, and Google Play rates it Teen. Apple also lists user-generated content and social media features.
The free model adds a risk paid rivals have less of: many more ads from outside networks, and Skywork already has a record there. In February 2026 the UK Advertising Standards Authority banned a DramaWave ad that showed sexual acts and a woman with blood across her face, after DramaWave blamed "a reviewing oversight". That ruling names DramaWave, not FreeReels, but the same company runs the advertising for both.
How to watch FreeReels more safely
- Treat "free" as "paid by ads". If you do buy VIP, check the renewal period on the purchase screen and cancel in your store settings at least a day before it renews.
- Refuse clipboard and calendar access. Neither is needed to watch.
- On an iPhone, tap "Ask App Not to Track"; on Android, delete or reset your advertising ID.
- On a child's phone, turn on Ask to Buy or Family Link approval, because the 13+ and Teen ratings will not block the app.
- Delete the account in the app under Profile, Setting, Delete account when you stop.
How we scored it
Regulatory record (88) is FreeReels' strongest factor: nothing names the app, and the DramaWave ad ruling is context only. Transparency and control (39) is the weakest, because of a "no subscriptions" claim on a listing that sells VIP plans. Privacy (40) is close behind, set by a policy that shares data with ad and analytics partners, reads the clipboard and collects installed apps while Google Play says nothing is shared. For a paid model from the same company, see DramaWave.
Questions people ask
Is FreeReels really free?
Many episodes can be watched for free with ads, which is how FreeReels makes most of its money. It is not entirely free. The US App Store lists VIP memberships at $19.99, $36.99 and $119.99 and coin packs from $4.99, and Google Play shows in-app items from $0.99 to $299.99.
Are FreeReels and DramaReels the same app?
Yes. FreeReels' privacy policy says the app is branded as DramaReels on iOS, and the App Store listing uses the same app ID, seller and website. On Android it keeps the FreeReels name. The same company, Skywork AI, also runs DramaWave and HotDrama.
Who owns FreeReels?
The app is run by Skywork AI Pte. Ltd. in Singapore, the same company that sells DramaWave and the StarMaker karaoke app. Kunlun Tech, a Chinese internet group that also owns most of Opera, lists DramaWave and Skywork among its own businesses.
Is FreeReels OK for kids?
Not by its own rules. Apple rates it 13+ and Google Play rates it Teen, but FreeReels' terms say the service is not for anyone under 18 without a parent's consent. Apple lists mature or suggestive themes, realistic violence and horror, and the app shows ads from outside networks.
How do I delete my FreeReels account?
The privacy policy says you can delete the account inside the app under Profile, Setting, Delete account. Cancel any VIP plan in your App Store or Google Play settings first, because deleting the app or the account does not stop store billing.
