How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Privacy30% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

Apple's label lists identifiers as used to track you; Google Play says nothing is shared. The June 2026 policy shares device IDs and usage with Firebase, AppsFlyer and advertisers, reads the clipboard for marketing, and covers AI features that process facial geometry and face embeddings.

  • Security30% of score

    50 out of 100, Weak

No breach of HotDrama user data was found. The policy says user data is encrypted at rest and in transit with TLS 1.2 and that systems are tested for vulnerabilities. Payments run through Apple or Google; we found no two-step login or bug bounty, and support uses Gmail addresses.

  • Transparency and control15% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

Account deletion is in the app (Profile, Setting, Delete account), and the policy and terms are dated 2026. Payments are final except where law requires, disputes go to arbitration in Singapore with a class-action waiver, and the store labels contradict the policy.

  • Scams and harmful content15% of score

    42 out of 100, Weak

Apple rates HotDrama 13+ for infrequent mature themes, realistic violence, profanity and horror, while its terms say the service is not for under-18s without a parent's consent. The app advertises live on-screen comments from other viewers, which Apple's rating does not list.

  • Regulatory record10% of score

    87 out of 100, Excellent

We found no privacy or consumer-protection fine or order against HotDrama, and no UK Advertising Standards Authority ruling naming it. The ASA's February 2026 ruling against sister app DramaWave is context only. The app is six months old and no regulator has examined it.

Is HotDrama safe?

HotDrama is a working app with no breach and no regulator action against it, but it is a near copy of DramaWave, and it copies DramaWave's weak points too. We score it 48/100, level with DramaWave (48) and FreeReels (48), both from the same company. Weekly VIP plans cost up to $29.99, the privacy policy reads your clipboard for marketing and covers AI features that process your face, and Apple rates it 13+ for a service its terms reserve for adults.

It is young and growing fast. HotDrama reached the US App Store on 22 April 2026. By October it was No. 93 among top-grossing US entertainment apps, No. 17 in Brazil and No. 23 in Indonesia, with only about 1,800 US ratings and just over 1 million Google Play downloads.

Who runs HotDrama

The seller and data controller is Skywork AI Pte. Ltd., at 2 Science Park Drive in Singapore, the company that also sells DramaWave, FreeReels and the StarMaker karaoke app. Skywork belongs to China's Kunlun Tech group.

The paperwork shows how closely the app follows DramaWave. On HotDrama's website, thedramabuzz.com, the main terms address still serves DramaWave's terms; only the mobile address linked from the App Store has HotDrama's own. Support goes to two Gmail addresses, [email protected] in the store listing and [email protected] in the policy, which makes fake support emails harder to spot.

What HotDrama costs

The US App Store lists weekly VIP memberships at $9.99, $11.99 and, three times over, $29.99, plus coin packs from $4.99 to $29.99. At $29.99 a week, a plan nobody cancels costs about $1,560 a year, the same as FlexTV's top weekly price and more than DramaWave's $19.99.

The terms, released in September 2026, say subscriptions renew automatically for weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly periods until you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends, and that a free trial becomes a paid plan unless cancelled in time. Payments are "final and non-refundable" except under HotDrama's own refund policy or the law. App Store and Google Play refunds must be requested from the stores, while web and Kakao Pay purchases follow a separate policy. Disputes go to the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, with three arbitrators and a class-action waiver.

What HotDrama collects

Apple's label says identifiers are used to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and that contact details and identifiers are linked to you. Google Play's section says HotDrama shares no data with other companies.

The US privacy policy, effective 25 June 2026, contradicts both. It says HotDrama may share device identifiers and usage data, including location, with Firebase and AppsFlyer, share data with advertisers and measurement firms to show personalised ads, and let outside ad networks serve ads in the app. With your permission it reads the clipboard when you copy or paste and uses the contents "to enable marketing and promotions". It may also ask for calendar access to set reminders, including subscription renewals.

The policy has a long section on AI features for which HotDrama may process "facial features, facial geometry, face landmarks, face embeddings" from photos you upload, and says these features are closed to under-18s. We did not see them advertised on the US store listings. On security, the policy says data is encrypted at rest and in transit with TLS 1.2 and that systems are tested regularly, the same wording as DramaWave's.

Is HotDrama OK for teenagers?

HotDrama's terms say the service "is not for persons under the age of 18" without a parent's consent, and its policy says it is not directed at under-18s. Apple nevertheless rates it 13+, listing infrequent cartoon and realistic violence, profanity, mature or suggestive themes and horror, and Google Play rates it Teen.

There is also a gap in what Apple shows. The store descriptions advertise "Live On-Screen Comments" so viewers can react to each other during playback, yet the App Store rating lists only advertising, not user-generated content, which DramaWave's and FreeReels' listings both do. HotDrama has no ASA ruling of its own, but in February 2026 the UK Advertising Standards Authority banned a sexually explicit DramaWave ad from the same company.

How to use HotDrama more safely

  1. Read the price and the word "weekly" on the purchase screen; most plans here cost $29.99 a week.
  2. Cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings at least a day before renewal. Deleting the app does not stop billing.
  3. Refuse clipboard and calendar requests, and do not upload your face to any AI feature.
  4. On an iPhone, tap "Ask App Not to Track"; on Android, reset your advertising ID.
  5. On a teenager's phone, turn on Ask to Buy or Family Link purchase approval.
  6. Delete the account in the app under Profile, Setting, Delete account when you stop, after cancelling the plan.

How we scored it

Regulatory record (87) is HotDrama's strongest factor: nothing names the app, but it is six months old and no regulator has examined it, so it sits a point below older short-drama apps with clean records. Privacy (40, level with transparency and control) is the weakest, because the policy shares data with ad and analytics partners, reads the clipboard and covers face data while Google Play says nothing is shared. Scams and harmful content (42) reflects a 13+ rating for an app its own terms set at 18, with live comments the rating does not mention.

Questions people ask

Is HotDrama legit?

Yes. HotDrama is a real app from Skywork AI Pte. Ltd. in Singapore, the company behind DramaWave, and the episodes you pay for do play. It is new, launched on the App Store in April 2026, and has more than 1 million Google Play downloads. The complaints to expect are about price, since weekly VIP plans reach $29.99.

Is HotDrama the same as DramaWave?

Same company, separate app. Both are sold by Skywork AI, and HotDrama's privacy policy and terms are close copies of DramaWave's, with the same data practices, payment rules and Singapore arbitration. HotDrama's website, thedramabuzz.com, still serves DramaWave's terms at one address, so check the app name on any document you read.

How much is HotDrama VIP?

On the US App Store, weekly VIP plans cost $9.99, $11.99 or, most often, $29.99, and coin packs run from $4.99 to $29.99. A $29.99 weekly plan left running costs about $1,560 a year. Plans renew until you cancel them in your store settings.

Is HotDrama OK for teenagers?

Not by its own terms. Apple rates it 13+ and Google Play rates it Teen, but the terms say the service is not for anyone under 18 without a parent's consent. The app also shows live comments from other viewers during playback.

Can I get a refund from HotDrama?

The terms say payments are final and non-refundable except where the law or HotDrama's own refund policy says otherwise. For App Store and Google Play purchases you must ask Apple or Google directly. Web and Kakao Pay purchases fall under a separate refund policy in the terms.
