Is ReelShort safe?

ReelShort

ReelShort is not malware and has no known breach, but it is built to sell. A weekly plan costs about $19.99 in the US, coin packs run up to $29.99, payments are non-refundable under its terms, and Apple rates it 13+ although its own terms say it is not for anyone under 18.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Privacy30% of score

    45 out of 100, Weak

Apple's label lists identifiers as used to track you, and usage data, user content and identifiers as linked to you. The privacy policy lets ad and analytics partners collect the advertising ID for targeted ads; Google Play's section says no data is shared with third parties.

  • Security30% of score

    50 out of 100, Weak

No breach of ReelShort user data was found. Payments go through Apple or Google, so ReelShort does not hold your card. Google Play says data is encrypted in transit. We found no two-step login option, and the privacy policy allows transfers to affiliates in other countries.

  • Transparency and control15% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

Weekly plans renew automatically and the terms call payments final and non-refundable. Closing the account is done by email to support. The store labels disagree with each other, and the 13+ store rating contradicts the terms, which say the service is not for under-18s.

  • Scams and harmful content15% of score

    50 out of 100, Weak

Shows are produced or licensed by the studio, with no open messaging between strangers. Apple lists sexual content or nudity, mature themes, alcohol and drug references and violence, all as infrequent, and rates the app 13+. There are no parental controls or kids profiles in the app.

  • Regulatory record10% of score

    88 out of 100, Excellent

No privacy or consumer-protection fine or order against ReelShort or Crazy Maple Studio was found at the EU, the UK advertising regulator or in public reporting. Complaints about billing on review sites are allegations, not findings.

Is ReelShort safe?

ReelShort is safe in the narrow sense: it is a real app, nobody can message you on it, and no breach of its users' data has been reported. The risk is to your wallet and, if a teenager uses it, to what they watch. We score it 51/100, below Netflix (65) and above TikTok (41).

The app streams vertical "short dramas", series cut into one- or two-minute episodes that end on a cliffhanger. The first few are free. After that you pay with coins or a weekly plan, and the store listing shows how much that can cost.

What ReelShort really costs

On the US App Store, ReelShort lists a subscription at $19.99 and one-time coin packs from $4.99 to $29.99. The app's own description says the subscription "is billed weekly", lasts seven days and renews automatically until you cancel at least 24 hours before the next period. At $19.99 a week, a plan left running for a year costs more than $1,000.

ReelShort's terms of use say subscription payments are "final and non-refundable", and buying coins gives you no ownership of anything. Disputes go to mediation and then individual arbitration under California law, not to court.

Most short-drama apps use the same model, so this is not unique to ReelShort. But it explains the gap between store ratings. Google Play shows 3.8 stars from about 1.95 million reviews, against 4.7 on the App Store, and complaint sites carry many posts about renewals and coin charges. Those posts are customers' accounts, not findings by a regulator, and we found no regulator decision against the company.

What data ReelShort collects

ReelShort's Apple label is short. Identifiers are used to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and usage data, user content and identifiers are linked to your identity. Diagnostics are collected without being linked.

The privacy policy, last updated on 20 October 2025, is more open about advertising than the label. It says ReelShort does not sell personal information, but that it lets advertising and analytics partners collect the Google or Apple advertising ID "for purposes of serving ads that are more relevant", and it offers Californians an opt-out of sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising. It also allows transfers to affiliated companies in other countries.

Google Play tells a different story: its data safety section says ReelShort shares no data with third parties and collects only an optional approximate location and name. The two store labels are the developer's own declarations, and they do not match. On an iPhone, tapping "Ask App Not to Track" when the app asks is the easiest fix.

Is ReelShort OK for teenagers?

This is where ReelShort is weakest. Apple rates the app 13+, and lists infrequent sexual content or nudity, mature or suggestive themes, alcohol and drug references and violence. Google Play rates it Teen. Yet ReelShort's terms say the service "is strictly for consumers and not for use by users under 18 years of age".

Typical titles involve forced marriages, affairs, billionaires and revenge. There is no kids profile, no content filter and no parental PIN. If a child has a phone with a card on the store account, the only real control is the store's own: Apple's Ask to Buy or Google Play's purchase approval.

ReelShort vs DramaWave and NetShort

The same model is everywhere in this genre, and the details vary:

  • DramaWave, from Skywork AI Pte Ltd in Singapore, sells weekly VIP plans at up to $19.99, and in February 2026 the UK Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint against a sexually violent DramaWave ad seen in the Vinted app. We score it 48/100 on its own page.
  • NetShort, from NETSTORY PTE. LTD. in Singapore, is rated 13+ and sells weekly VIP plans from $5.99 to $29.99. Its label is broader than ReelShort's or DramaWave's: identifiers, usage data, diagnostics and "other data" are all used to track you. We score it 47/100 on its own page.

DramaBox, the biggest rival, collects noticeably more data than ReelShort and carries an 18+ App Store rating. StoryReel (48), GoodShort (52), ShortMax (48) and FlexTV (47), which sells a $29.99 weekly plan, have their own pages too.

How to watch without overpaying

  1. Before you buy, open the price list in the store listing and note whether a plan is weekly or monthly.
  2. Set a calendar reminder a day before each renewal, or cancel right after subscribing. You keep access until the paid week ends.
  3. Cancel in your phone's subscription settings. Deleting the app does not stop the billing.
  4. For a teenager, switch on Ask to Buy (Apple Family Sharing) or purchase approvals (Google Family Link), and set an app age limit below 13 to block the app.
  5. Ask the App Store or Google Play for a refund soon after an unwanted charge.

How we scored it

Regulatory record (88) is ReelShort's strongest factor, because we found no fine or order; we keep it below 90 because few regulators have looked at short-drama apps yet. Transparency and control (40) is the weakest: non-refundable weekly billing, account closure by email, and an age rating that contradicts the app's own terms. Privacy (45) reflects ad tracking through advertising IDs, and scams and harmful content (50) the lack of any child controls on adult-themed shows.

Questions people ask

Is ReelShort a scam?

No. ReelShort is a real streaming app from Crazy Maple Studio, and the episodes you pay for do play. The problem is the pricing. A weekly plan costs about $19.99 in the US and renews every seven days, so a few weeks of forgotten renewals add up to more than a year of many big streaming services.

How do I cancel a ReelShort subscription?

Cancel it in the subscription settings of the store you paid through, Apple's or Google Play's, not in the app. Deleting the app does not stop the charges. ReelShort's App Store description says to cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date, and you keep access until the paid week ends.

Can I get a refund from ReelShort?

ReelShort's terms say subscription payments are final and non-refundable. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, ask the store instead; both have refund request pages, and Apple and Google decide on their own rules. Ask soon after the charge, and say if a child made the purchase.

Is ReelShort OK for a 13-year-old?

We would not hand it to one. Apple rates ReelShort 13+ and Google Play rates it Teen, but ReelShort's own terms say the service is not for anyone under 18. Many stories involve affairs, revenge and sexual themes, and the app has no kids profile or parental controls.

Who owns ReelShort?

ReelShort is run by Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale, California, and is sold on the App Store by New Leaf Publishing, Inc. Its privacy policy allows data transfers to affiliates in other countries.
