Is Bishkek safe?
Bishkek
Bishkek is a relaxed, green capital and serious violence against visitors is rare. The risks are street theft, from Osh Bazaar pickpockets to muggings after dark, fast-rising road crashes, winter smog about four times the WHO guideline, weak hospitals and a high earthquake risk.

Is Bishkek safe?
Mostly, yes. Kyrgyzstan's capital is a low-rise, leafy city where murders are rare: UNODC recorded 1.75 Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary people in Kyrgyzstan in 2020, the US rates the country Level 1, and 77% of people in Kyrgyzstan told Gallup in 2025 that they feel safe walking alone at night, more than in Almaty next door.
The catches are street theft, the traffic, the winter air and the ground under the city. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns of bag-snatching and mugging, crashes in Bishkek are rising fast, and the city sits in a high earthquake zone. We score Bishkek 67 out of 100, below Almaty (69) and Astana (72), mostly for its roads and weaker hospitals. Our Kyrgyzstan page covers the mountains and the rest of the country.
Street theft and the night
Theft is the crime a visitor is most likely to meet. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says street crime, including bag-snatching and mugging, is a risk in Kyrgyzstan, and that pickpockets target tourists at Osh Bazaar, the big market west of the centre. It also advises care at currency exchange offices, where a thief can see how much cash you carry. Count your money inside, not on the pavement, and use ATMs inside banks or malls.
Evenings in the centre are relaxed. Ala-Too Square, Erkindik Boulevard, Chuy Avenue and the streets around them stay lively, and cafes and bars stay open late. The FCDO's advice is to take care if you go out alone and to use private cars or pre-booked taxis at night. Many side streets and parks are poorly lit, so after dark the practical rule is to ride, not walk. Drink spiking happens in clubs and bars and can lead to sexual assault, so keep your glass in sight.
Two police habits surprise visitors. Officers raid bars and clubs for drugs, masked and armed; the FCDO says you are normally asked for ID and allowed to leave if you have nothing on you. And you must carry your passport or a notarised copy at all times, as police can detain you without it. Demonstrations are common and usually peaceful, but protests against South Asian migrant workers and students injured 41 people in May 2024, so walk away from any crowd that gathers.
Traffic: the risk that is growing
Bishkek's last full count is from 2021, when city patrol police recorded 64 road deaths in 2,663 crashes, roughly 5 to 6 per 100,000 people, and pedestrians were involved in 1,346 of those crashes. Since then the trend has been bad. Kyrgyzstan's road deaths rose 21% to 900 in 2025, the Prosecutor General's office put 27% of the country's crashes in Bishkek, and scooter deaths in the city doubled from 7 to 14 as rental scooters spread.
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says many roads are poorly lit and badly maintained, roadworks are often unsigned, and pedestrians pay little attention to traffic. Drivers, in turn, rarely stop for people on foot. Cross at lights, look both ways on one-way streets, and watch for scooters on the pavement. Book a licensed taxi rather than flagging one down, and avoid the marshrutka minibuses, which are crowded, poorly maintained and popular with pickpockets.
Smog, hospitals and dogs
IQAir measured an annual average of 21.2 µg/m³ of PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary (PM2.5) in Bishkek in 2024, about four times the WHO guideline and the 36th worst of the capitals it tracks. The average hides the season. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says air quality has deteriorated, especially in winter, when coal heating in the city and its outskirts fills the valley with smoke. Summer air is far better. If you have asthma or a heart condition, plan for bad days from November to March.
Medical care is the bigger worry. The FCDO calls hospitals in Kyrgyzstan often badly equipped and unhygienic, with limited drugs and no guarantee of sterile equipment, and advises accepting only basic or essential treatment. Bishkek's private clinics are the best option. Buy insurance that covers medical evacuation. CDC says rabid dogs are common, so keep away from street dogs and ask a travel clinic about rabies vaccination before a long trip.
Earthquakes and winter
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary rates the earthquake risk in Kyrgyzstan as high and says tremors are frequent. Bishkek sits at the foot of the Kyrgyz Range, and two of the strongest quakes in the USGS record for the region struck about 110 km away: a magnitude 7.3 at Suusamyr in August 1992 and a 7.0 near Kemin in June 1938. Choose a newer hotel where you can, and learn the basics: drop, cover and hold on.
Winters are cold rather than extreme, but the FCDO warns that power cuts are frequent across the country in winter. Carry a power bank and a torch, and ask your hotel whether it has a generator.
