Is Colombo safe?
Colombo
Colombo is one of the easier big cities in South Asia for a visitor. Violent crime against foreigners is rare and the air is far cleaner than in Delhi or Kathmandu, but gang shootings make the local news, buses drive hard, thieves snatch bags from mopeds, and the Kelani River floods the north of the city.

Dengue is the main disease risk and peaks with the monsoon rains. Private hospitals in Colombo are the best in the country.
Natural hazards10% of score
66 out of 100, FairEarthquake risk is low, but the two monsoons flood low-lying streets. During Cyclone Ditwah in late November 2025, the Kelani River flooded northern Colombo and suburbs such as Kaduwela, and 627 people died across Sri Lanka (DMC).
Is Colombo safe?
Yes, for most visitors, and it is calmer than India's big cities. The UK Foreign Office says violent crime against foreigners is rare, Sri Lanka's Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary was 2.51 per 100,000 in 2022 (UNODC), and the air averaged 16.9 µg/m³ of PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary in 2024, far cleaner than in Delhi or Kathmandu. The catches are smaller and more frequent: thieves on mopeds, card fraud, tuk-tuk tricks, hard-driven buses and monsoon floods.
We score Colombo 66 out of 100, level with Mumbai and Bangkok. Our Sri Lanka page covers the hill country, the trains and the beaches.
Gang shootings and terrorism
The violent crime in Colombo's headlines rarely involves visitors. Sri Lanka Police recorded 114 shootings in 2025, with 60 dead and 57 injured, and said more than 73% were linked to organised crime and drug trafficking rivalries. Some happen in Colombo: in August 2026 a businessman related to an underworld figure was shot dead in Maligawatte. Shootings were down in 2026, with 29 incidents and 18 deaths by 14 August. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says gun crime is usually a dispute between criminal groups.
Terrorism is the rarer, larger risk. On Easter Sunday 2019, suicide bombers attacked St Anthony's Shrine in Kochchikade and the Shangri-La, Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury hotels in Colombo, as well as churches in Negombo and Batticaloa, killing more than 250 people. Nothing on that scale has happened since, but the FCDO and the US both say attacks cannot be ruled out. Roads around government and military sites are often closed for VIP convoys.
Theft, card fraud and tuk-tuks
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary reports an increase in low-level opportunistic crime. The pattern most visitors meet is a bag or phone snatched by someone riding past on a moped, so carry bags on the side away from the road, especially on Galle Road and around Pettah market. Bank card fraud is common: use ATMs inside banks or hotels and keep your card in sight when you pay. Thefts from guesthouse rooms are reported too.
Tuk-tuks are cheap and everywhere, and the standard trick is a driver who offers a tour, mentions a one-day temple festival or gem sale, and ends at a shop that pays him commission. Book through PickMe or Uber, which fix the fare, or insist on the meter.
Walking at night and women's safety
Gallup's 2025 report found 63% of people in Sri Lanka feel safe walking alone at night, lower than India (72%) or Thailand (70%). In Colombo the busy evening areas are Galle Face Green, Colombo 7 around Independence Square, and the hotel and restaurant strip of Kollupitiya. Side streets go quiet early.
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says women continue to report harassment from lewd comments to sexual assault, mostly in crowded markets, bus and railway stations and tourist sites, and warns of occasional harassment by tuk-tuk drivers at night. Drink spiking has been used to rob and assault victims. If a driver makes you uneasy, get out and change vehicle; app rides leave a record.
Traffic and pedestrians
Sri Lanka Police counted 2,710 road deaths in 2025, up from 2,388 the year before, about 12 per 100,000 people. There is no published Colombo figure, but in early 2026 police said 32% of those killed nationally were pedestrians. In the city, private buses race each other for passengers and rarely give way, motorbikes weave between lanes, and zebra crossings are often ignored. Cross at signals, look both ways even on one-way roads, and do not rent a motorbike in Colombo traffic.
Health and floods
Dengue is the disease to plan for. It peaks with the monsoon rains, so use repellent during the day. Drink bottled or filtered water. Private hospitals in Colombo are the best in Sri Lanka, and patients from the rest of the island are often moved there.
Colombo floods most years. During Cyclone Ditwah at the end of November 2025, the Kelani River rose over its banks and flooded northern Colombo and suburbs such as Kaduwela, while 627 people died across the country, mostly in the hills. The city itself is low and flat, so the risk is waterlogged streets and blocked roads rather than landslides. Earthquake risk is low.
How we scored it
Violent crime (78) is Colombo's strongest factor; gang shootings and the memory of 2019 keep it just below the band its Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary would give. Traffic safety (52) is the weakest, followed by theft and scams, walking at night, and health and environment (all 64). Natural hazards (66) reflects river and monsoon floods. Confidence is medium because Sri Lanka publishes no city homicide or road death rate for Colombo.
Questions people ask
Is Colombo safe for tourists?
Yes, for most visitors. Violent crime against foreigners is rare, according to the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary, and the gang shootings in the news are almost always between criminal groups. The risks you are more likely to meet are bag snatching from mopeds, card fraud, tuk-tuk overcharging and the traffic.
Is Galle Face Green safe at night?
It is one of the busiest places in the city on an evening, with families, food stalls and kite flyers, and it is generally safe while crowded. Keep your phone away from the road side, watch for touts, and take an app-booked tuk-tuk or taxi home rather than walking along Galle Road late.
How do I avoid tuk-tuk scams in Colombo?
Book through PickMe or Uber, which show the fare in advance, or use a tuk-tuk with a working meter. Ignore drivers who say a temple or shop is having a one-day festival or sale; that ride ends at a gem or souvenir shop that pays them commission.
Is it safe to swim at Mount Lavinia beach?
Only on calm days and where locals or lifeguards are swimming. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says many Sri Lankan beaches have dangerous surf and rip currents at certain times of year, and the west coast is roughest during the south-west monsoon from about May to September.
Can I drink tap water in Colombo?
Drink bottled or filtered water. Most hotels provide it, and it is cheap everywhere. Avoid ice from street stalls if you have a sensitive stomach.
