Is Negril safe?

Negril

Negril is calmer than Montego Bay or Kingston, and murders in Westmoreland, the parish that holds most of it, fell 28% in 2026 to late October. But the rate is still about 19 per 100,000, many visitors stay in small, lightly guarded places, and the nearest public hospital is still being rebuilt after Hurricane Melissa.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Violent crime25% of score

    43 out of 100, Weak

JCF figures show 23 murders in Westmoreland from 1 January to 24 October 2026, down from 32, or about 19 per 100,000 a year on the preliminary population of 146,205 (STATIN). Hanover, which holds the north end of Seven Mile Beach, had 14, about 25 per 100,000.

  • Theft and scams20% of score

    48 out of 100, Weak

Westmoreland police recorded 13 robberies and 23 break-ins to late October 2026, both down. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says robbery is the motive for most attacks on tourists and that resort burglaries occur. Canada says smaller, isolated places with less security carry more risk, and Negril has many.

  • Walking at night15% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against walking at night anywhere in Jamaica and on deserted beaches even by day. We score Negril above Kingston and Montego Bay (35), which have the same advice, because Westmoreland's murder rate is lower and the beach strip is busy in the evening. Gallup does not survey Jamaica.

  • Traffic safety15% of score

    45 out of 100, Weak

Police counted 374 road deaths in Jamaica in 2025, about 13 per 100,000; WHO's 2023 estimate is 19.6. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says rural roads are narrow, winding and poorly lit at night, and US government staff may not drive between cities after dark.

  • Health and environment15% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

Negril has no public hospital. In January 2026 Savanna-la-Mar Hospital still relied on a field hospital run on generator fuel (Gleaner); in October 2026 wards were still being repaired and a new A&E department was being costed (JIS). Private care wants cash up front.

  • Natural hazards10% of score

    35 out of 100, Poor

Hurricane Melissa made landfall near New Hope in Westmoreland on 28 October 2025 as a Category 5 storm. The NHC says the inner core crossed Westmoreland and Hanover with extreme structural damage, and Westmoreland had 15 of Jamaica's 45 deaths.

Is Negril safe?

For most visitors, yes, and it is the calmest of Jamaica's big resort areas. The Jamaica Constabulary Force counted 23 murders in Westmoreland, the parish that holds Negril's town centre, West End cliffs and most of Seven Mile Beach, from 1 January to 24 October 2026. That was down from 32 a year earlier. Hanover, which holds the north end of the beach, had 14, down from 18.

That still works out at about 19 murders per 100,000 people a year in Westmoreland, a high rate by world standards. We score Negril 43, a little above Montego Bay and Kingston, with the same official advice to take care after dark.

Where the risk is

Gang violence in western Jamaica sits mostly in towns that tourists drive through rather than stay in. The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary, updated on 23 June 2026, asks visitors to reconsider travel to Savanna-la-Mar and Grange Hill in Westmoreland and the Green Island area in Hanover, on the coast road between Negril and Montego Bay. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary names Savanna-la-Mar as a place to be careful. None of these is a reason to cancel a beach week, but they are not places to explore on foot.

In Negril itself the risk is robbery and burglary. Westmoreland police recorded 13 robberies and 23 break-ins to late October 2026, both lower than the year before, and many go unreported. Negril has more small guesthouses, cliff cottages and private villas than other Jamaican resorts, and Canada says the smaller and more isolated a place is, the less security it has. Lock doors and windows at night, use the safe, and pick a place with a guard or a gated compound if you travel alone.

The FCDO and Canada both report sexual assaults on visitors, including at resorts, often by someone met at a bar, on the beach or on an excursion. Do not tell new acquaintances your room number, and arrange your own transport back.

Seven Mile Beach and the West End after dark

Negril has more life after dark than most resort towns, with beach bars along Norman Manley Boulevard and sunset crowds at the West End cliffs. The usual trouble is persistence: offers of ganja, boat trips and rides, and vendors who will not take no for an answer. Say no once, firmly, and walk on.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against walking at night anywhere in Jamaica and on deserted beaches even in daytime. In Negril that means taking a taxi between the beach and the West End rather than walking the dark stretches of road between them, and not walking the sand back to your hotel late at night. Use ATMs inside hotels or banks, in daylight.

Hurricane Melissa and medical care

Melissa came ashore near New Hope in Westmoreland on 28 October 2025 as a Category 5 hurricane, the strongest landfall on record in Jamaica. The National Hurricane Center says its inner core crossed Westmoreland and Hanover, where wooden buildings were destroyed and most roofs stripped. Westmoreland had 15 of Jamaica's 45 deaths.

The big resorts have largely reopened. Royalton Negril, closed since the storm, reopened its 573 rooms on 25 August 2026. Health care has been slower. Negril has clinics but no public hospital, and the nearest one, in Savanna-la-Mar, still relied in January 2026 on a field hospital built by the Barbados Defence Force and run on generator fuel. In October 2026 the health minister said a ward extension was finished, a surgical ward was being repaired and a new emergency department was still being costed. Serious cases may go to Cornwall Regional in Montego Bay, itself under repair.

So bring all your medicines, and buy insurance that covers air evacuation. The State Department puts the minimum cost of an air ambulance to the US at about US$30,000, and private hospitals want payment before admission.

Roads and getting there

Most visitors arrive at Montego Bay's airport and drive west along the coast through Hanover. Jamaica's police counted 374 road deaths in 2025, about 13 per 100,000 people, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary describes narrow, winding, badly lit rural roads, speeding and drink-driving. Canada says police checkpoints are common on the A1 coast road. Use a resort transfer or a JTB-licensed taxi with a blue sticker, avoid route taxis, and do not rent a scooter unless you ride often at home.

How we scored it

Natural hazards (35) is Negril's weakest factor after Melissa's direct hit, followed by night safety (40) and health and environment (40), held down by the slow rebuilding of Savanna-la-Mar Hospital. Violent crime (43) reflects a murder rate of about 19 per 100,000 that is falling. The weighted average of 43 is far below the cap of 110 set by Jamaica's conflict score of 75.

Questions people ask

Is Negril safer than Montego Bay?

On the numbers, yes. Westmoreland, the parish that holds most of Negril, had about 19 murders per 100,000 at its 2026 pace, against about 35 in St James around Montego Bay, and killings fell in Westmoreland while they rose in St James. The same rules apply in both, though, so use licensed taxis and do not walk alone at night.

Is Seven Mile Beach in Negril safe?

By day, in front of the hotels, it is usually fine, apart from persistent vendors and offers of drugs or boat trips. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against walking on deserted beaches even in daytime, so do not walk the quiet stretches between properties alone, and do not walk the beach back to your hotel after dark.

Has Negril recovered from Hurricane Melissa?

Mostly, for visitors. The large resorts were repaired over 2026, with Royalton Negril reopening on 25 August. Westmoreland's public hospital in Savanna-la-Mar is still being rebuilt, and inland villages took heavy damage. Check that your hotel is fully open and that your insurance covers air evacuation.

Is it safe to jump at Rick's Café?

Visitors jump from the West End cliffs there every evening, but it is a risk you take on yourself, and no official body checks it. Check that your travel insurance covers cliff jumping, start from a low ledge, watch where others land, and do not jump after drinking.

How do I get from Montego Bay airport to Negril safely?

Book a resort transfer or a Jamaica Tourist Board licensed taxi, which carries a blue JTB sticker, and agree the fare first. The drive along the coast through Hanover takes about an hour and a half on a fast, busy road, and US government staff are not allowed to drive between cities at night, so try to land in daylight.
