Is Montego Bay safe?
Montego Bay
Most visitors fly into Montego Bay, stay in guarded resorts and never see trouble. But St James, the parish around the city, is bucking Jamaica's fall in murders, with 54 killings by late October 2026, up 17%. The main hospital is still recovering from Hurricane Melissa.

30 out of 100, PoorJCF figures show 54 murders in St James from 1 January to 24 October 2026, up 17% while Jamaica's total fell 24%. On the parish's population of about 189,000 (preliminary census count, STATIN) that is roughly 35 per 100,000 a year. Shootings rose 6% to 50.

Flankers, Mount Salem and nearby areas are on the US reconsider-travel list.

Natural hazards10% of score

Is Montego Bay safe?
For a resort holiday, usually yes. Most visitors land at Sangster International, drive a few minutes to a guarded hotel on the coast and leave a week later without incident. But the city around those hotels is one of the most violent places in Jamaica, and in 2026 it is going the wrong way. The Jamaica Constabulary Force counted 54 murders in St James, the parish that contains Montego Bay, from 1 January to 24 October 2026, up from 46 a year earlier. Over the same months murders across Jamaica fell 24%, to 431.
On the parish's population of about 189,000, that pace works out at roughly 35 per 100,000 a year, higher than our estimate for Kingston. We score Montego Bay 40, just below Kingston and well below the resort coast of Punta Cana.
Where the danger is
Gang violence in Montego Bay is concentrated in communities on the hills and flats behind the tourist strip. The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary, updated on 23 June 2026, asks visitors to reconsider travel to six St James areas: Salt Spring, Flankers, Rose Heights, the Hart Street area, Norwood and Mount Salem. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary adds Barrett Town and Glendevon. Some of these are close to where tourists are. Flankers is next to the airport, and Mount Salem is a few minutes uphill from the city centre.
Visitors are rarely caught up in shootings. The risk for them is robbery, which the FCDO says is the motive for most attacks on tourists. Recorded robbery in St James actually fell 36% in 2026 to late October, to 37 cases, but break-ins rose 69% to 61, and the FCDO notes burglaries at resorts as well as private rentals. Sexual assault is the other risk to plan for: the US embassy routinely receives reports, including from tourists at resorts, and the FCDO says perpetrators are often people the victim met at a bar, beach or excursion.
When shootings flare, the government can declare a state of emergency or a zone of special operations, with checkpoints and curfews at short notice. The FCDO says these rarely affect tourists, but ask your hotel if one is in force.
The Hip Strip, beaches and nights out
Gloucester Avenue, known as the Hip Strip, runs along the bay past Doctor's Cave Beach and is where most visitors eat and drink outside their resort. It is busy in the evening, and the usual problem is persistence rather than danger: vendors, offers of ganja and men offering rides or tours. Say no firmly and keep walking.
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises not walking in isolated areas or on deserted beaches even in daytime, and not walking at night. Use ATMs inside hotels or malls in daylight, and take a licensed taxi between the Hip Strip and your hotel after dark, even if the map says it is a short walk.
Hurricane Melissa and the hospital
Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland on 28 October 2025 as a Category 5 hurricane, the strongest on record in Jamaica. The National Hurricane Center says St James had hurricane-force winds, rivers in Montego Bay overflowed because they could not drain the rain fast enough, and storm surge on the north coast near the city reached about 2 ft above ground.
The lasting damage for visitors is to health care. Cornwall Regional Hospital, the only Type A hospital in the county of Cornwall, lost or had damaged 81% of its roof, according to MSF, which helped repair it. Emergency care moved to the Mount Salem clinic. In October 2026 the health minister said a new emergency department twice that size was ready to open, but full restoration of the hospital has been pushed back to March 2027. The building was already under repair after a noxious-fumes problem first emerged in 2017.
Private hospitals want payment before admission, and the US says ambulances are not always staffed or available. Bring all your medicines, and buy insurance with air evacuation; the State Department puts the minimum cost of an air ambulance to the US at about US$30,000.
Roads and transfers
Jamaica's police counted 374 road deaths in 2025, about 13 per 100,000 people, and the roads from Montego Bay to Negril and Ocho Rios carry fast traffic, minibuses and motorcycles. Use a resort transfer or a Jamaica Tourist Board licensed taxi with a blue JTB sticker. Avoid route taxis and driving between towns at night, which US government staff may not do.
How we scored it
Violent crime (30) is Montego Bay's weakest factor: a murder rate of about 35 per 100,000 at the 2026 pace, rising while the rest of Jamaica falls. Night safety (35) and natural hazards (40) are also low, reflecting official advice not to walk after dark and the damage Melissa did. Health and environment (48) is held down by Cornwall Regional's slow recovery. The weighted average of 40 is far below the cap of 110 set by Jamaica's conflict score of 75. If St James follows the national trend, the score will rise.
Questions people ask
Is the Hip Strip in Montego Bay safe?
Gloucester Avenue, the Hip Strip, is the city's tourist strip of bars, restaurants and beach clubs, and it is busy in the evening. Expect persistent vendors and offers of drugs or rides. Take a JTB-licensed taxi back to your hotel rather than walking along the empty stretches at either end late at night.
Which areas of Montego Bay should tourists avoid?
The US asks visitors to reconsider travel to Salt Spring, Flankers, Rose Heights, the Hart Street area, Norwood and Mount Salem, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary adds Barrett Town and Glendevon. Flankers sits right behind the airport and the resort strip, so do not walk out of the tourist area to explore on foot.
Is it safe to take a taxi from Montego Bay airport?
Yes, if it is licensed. Use your resort's transfer or a Jamaica Tourist Board licensed taxi, which carries a blue JTB sticker on the windscreen, and agree the fare before you set off. Avoid route taxis and unmarked cars offering rides outside the terminal.
Has Montego Bay recovered from Hurricane Melissa?
Partly. Hotels have been reopening since the storm, but Cornwall Regional Hospital, the main public hospital for western Jamaica, lost most of its roof and the government now expects full restoration by March 2027. Check that your hotel is fully open and that your insurance covers evacuation.
Is Montego Bay safer than Kingston?
For most visitors the day-to-day risk is similar, because resort guests in Montego Bay and hotel guests in New Kingston rarely see gang violence. On the numbers, St James had about 35 murders per 100,000 at its 2026 pace, above the roughly 25 we estimate for Kingston, and it is one of the few parts of Jamaica where killings rose in 2026.
