Is Kingston safe?
Kingston
Kingston is safer than it was even a year ago, with murders down about 29% in 2026 so far, but it remains one of the most violent capitals in the Americas. Visitors who stay in New Kingston and take the Humming Bird route from the airport usually have no trouble; gang violence is concentrated in named inner-city areas.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Violent crime25% of score
33 out of 100, PoorThe six Kingston and St Andrew police divisions recorded 125 murders and 132 shootings from January to late September 2026, down from 175 murders a year earlier. That is still roughly 25 per 100,000 a year, and about a third of Jamaica's killings.
Theft and scams20% of score
45 out of 100, WeakThe FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says robbery is the motive for most attacks on tourists, and British visitors have been tracked from Norman Manley airport and robbed at their accommodation. ATM users are targeted. Recorded robbery is low, at 146 cases in 2026 to late September, but many go unreported.
Walking at night15% of score

New Kingston and Hope Road have restaurants, bars and hotels with security, but most residents drive or take a taxi even for short trips after dark.
Traffic safety15% of score

Natural hazards10% of score
45 out of 100, WeakHurricane season runs June to November. Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm in October 2025, hit western Jamaica hardest; Kingston had tropical-storm winds with hurricane-force gusts (NHC). The city lies in an active earthquake zone and was destroyed by a quake in 1907.
Is Kingston safe?
Kingston is safer than its reputation and getting safer, but it is still one of the most violent capitals in the Americas. The six police divisions of Kingston and St Andrew recorded 125 murders between 1 January and 26 September 2026, down from 175 in the same period of 2025, according to the Jamaica Constabulary Force. That is still about a third of all murders on the island, and on our estimate roughly 25 per 100,000 people a year.
The violence is mostly between gangs in inner-city communities that visitors have no reason to enter. We score Kingston 42, above Cape Town and below Rio de Janeiro, and well below the resort-heavy picture on our Jamaica page. Business travellers and music fans who stay in New Kingston, use hotel transport and plan each trip rarely see trouble.
Where the violence is
The JCF figures show where the killings happen. St Andrew South had 36 murders in 2026 to late September, the most in the capital, followed by St Andrew Central with 29 and Kingston Eastern with 24. St Andrew North had 9, down from 30. The fall is not even: murders rose in Kingston Eastern and St Andrew Central, and shootings rose 44% in Kingston Western, around the downtown waterfront.
The US State Department keeps Jamaica at Level 2 but asks visitors to reconsider travel to ten named Kingston and St Andrew neighbourhoods: August Town, Brooke Valley, Mountain View, Nannyville Gardens, the Swallowfield area, New Haven, the Sherlock Crescent area, Denham Town, Parade Gardens and Greenwich Town. Most are residential areas that tourists do not pass through, except Mountain View, which lies on one of the two roads from the airport.
Getting in from the airport
Norman Manley International Airport sits on the Palisadoes, a long spit of land across the harbour. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says most people take the Humming Bird route via South Camp Road, because the alternative through Mountain View has seen sporadic violence. It also says British visitors have been tracked from the airport and robbed as they arrived at private accommodation, which is a strong reason to stay in a hotel with a gate and guards for your first night.
Robbery, not gang crime, is the main risk for visitors. The FCDO's advice:
- Use ATMs inside hotels or malls in daylight, and do not take out large sums at once.
- Keep phones and jewellery out of sight, and leave nothing visible in a parked car.
- Do not walk in isolated areas, even by day, or anywhere at night.
- If you are held up, hand things over. Resisting can turn a robbery into a shooting.
Getting around
Taxis approved by the Jamaica Tourist Board carry photo ID and a blue sticker, and hotels can call them. Uber now works in parts of Kingston. Avoid the shared route taxis and buses; US government staff are not allowed to use public buses or to drive between cities at night.
Driving yourself is a poor idea unless you know the city. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says lane discipline is poor, speeding and drink-driving are common and many drivers have no insurance. Jamaica recorded 374 road deaths in 2025, about 13 per 100,000 people, with motorcyclists a growing share.
Hurricanes, earthquakes and hospitals
Kingston sits in hurricane country and on active faults. In 1907 an earthquake and fire destroyed much of the city. Hurricane Melissa, which reached Category 5 in October 2025, made landfall in the south-west; the National Hurricane Center says Kingston had sustained tropical-storm-force winds with gusts of hurricane force, so the capital escaped the worst damage. Hurricane season runs from June to November, and heavy rain floods gullies and cuts roads into the Blue Mountains.
Kingston has the country's main hospitals, including the University Hospital of the West Indies, but the US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary warns of slow emergency response, ambulances without trained staff and private hospitals that want payment before they admit you. Travel insurance with evacuation cover matters here; the State Department puts the minimum cost of an air ambulance to the US at about US$30,000.
How we scored it
Violent crime (33) and night safety (35) are Kingston's weakest factors. Theft, traffic and natural hazards sit in the mid-40s, and health and environment (55) is its strongest. If the 2026 fall in murders holds for a full year, the violent crime score will rise.
