Is Saint Kitts and Nevis safe to visit?
Saint Kitts and Nevis
Visitors rarely meet trouble, and the US rates St Kitts and Nevis Level 1. But for a federation of about 47,000 people the murder count is high: 28 in 2024 and about 30 in 2023. 2025 brought only 7. Hurricanes, fast traffic and evacuation for serious illness are the other risks.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Violent crime25% of score
32 out of 100, PoorPolice recorded 28 homicides in 2024 (SKNIS), and UNODC put 2023 at 64.2 per 100,000 (World Bank). 2025 fell to 7, a rate of 13.6 (InSight Crime). With 47,000 people one killing moves the rate by 2, so we score the 2019-2025 average of about 34.

The government count is lower; the Attorney General said in January 2025 that 36 people died in 31 fatal crashes between 2020 and 2025, roughly 15 per 100,000 a year, so we score a little above the band position. Speeding and phone use are the main causes named.

68 out of 100, FairThe FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says the two public hospitals, in Basseterre and Charlestown, can provide many treatments but serious cases may need evacuation, and care is expensive. Petty crime and scams10% of score
72 out of 100, GoodThe US calls the islands generally safe and does not single out theft. Is St Kitts and Nevis safe to visit?
For a typical holiday, yes. The US rates the federation at Level 1 and calls it "generally a safe destination", and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against no part of it. The catch is the murder rate. With only about 47,000 people, St Kitts and Nevis has for years had one of the highest Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary in the Americas, and neither the US nor the UK describes visitors as targets. We score it 58, below Antigua and Barbuda (70) and above Saint Lucia (56).
How high is the murder rate, really?
The numbers jump around because the population is so small. Police recorded 28 homicides in 2024, of which 16 were solved, according to the government information service. UNODC data on the World Bank put 2023 at 64.2 per 100,000, or about 30 killings. Then 2025 brought a sharp fall: InSight Crime counted 7 victims, a rate of 13.6 and the lowest count in 23 years. The government credits a public health approach to crime and the seizure of illegal guns.
One good year in a country this size can be luck as much as policy, so we score a seven-year average. Across 2019-2025 the federation averaged about 16 killings a year, roughly 34 per 100,000. That is still in the worst band of our rubric, though the trend is the right way. Check the 2026 count before you assume the improvement has held.
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary lists murder, armed robbery and sexual assault among serious crimes and asks visitors to:
- keep rooms and yachts locked
- avoid isolated areas, including beaches, after dark
- take extra care at street and beach parties, especially after dark and in the festival season
- keep car doors locked and not stop for people flagging you down
Roads on two small islands
WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 23.1 road deaths per 100,000 people in 2021, a modelled figure for a country this small. The government's own count is lower. In January 2025 the Attorney General said that 8,569 crashes had been reported from 2019 to 2024 and that 31 fatal crashes had killed 36 people between 2020 and 2025. That is about seven deaths a year, roughly 15 per 100,000, still high for an island where the main highway has a 40 mph limit. Speeding and phone use were the causes he named, and a 2025 law brought in speed and red-light cameras.
Traffic drives on the left. You need a local licence (EC$62.50 for three months), which rental firms usually arrange. Expect potholes, unmarked speed bumps, blind corners in the countryside and pedestrians walking on unlit roads at night. Licensed taxis have yellow plates beginning with T or TA; they are not metered, so agree the fare first.
Hurricanes, a volcano and medical care
The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary notes that the islands regularly experience hurricanes. The season runs from June to November. Hurricane Georges made landfall on 21 September 1998 with winds of 100 knots, killed 4 people and caused about US$400 million of damage, according to the National Hurricane Center. Earthquakes are also a risk. Mt Liamuiga, the peak above the north of St Kitts, is a live volcano; the UWI Seismic Research Centre dates its last major eruption to about 1,600 years ago and monitors it continuously.
The Joseph N. France General Hospital in Basseterre and Alexandra Hospital in Charlestown can handle many treatments, but the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says serious cases may need evacuation and care is expensive. Get insurance that covers medical evacuation. CDC recommends hepatitis A vaccination and lists dengue and Zika, so use repellent in the daytime; pregnant travellers should check the Zika advice.
Before you go
All visitors now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travel. Two local laws catch people out: wearing camouflage clothing is illegal, including for children, with a fine of EC$250 and up to three months in prison, and penalties for drug offences are severe. Cannabis for personal use is decriminalised only with a licence. Check luggage for forgotten ammunition, which the US warns about. Currents at unguarded beaches can be strong, so swim where you see flags.
How we scored it
Conflict (90) and petty crime (72) are the strongest factors: visitors face little theft and no political risk. Violent crime (32) is by far the weakest; we used the 2019-2025 average rather than the 2025 low because a handful of cases moves the rate a lot. Road safety (42) uses WHO's 2021 estimate of 23.1 deaths per 100,000, a few points higher because the government's own count is lower; the gap between the two is one reason confidence is medium.
Questions people ask
Is St Kitts safe for tourists?
Yes, for most visitors. The US rates it Level 1 and calls it generally safe, and neither the US nor the UK reports a pattern of attacks on tourists behind the high murder rate. Use licensed taxis, lock your room and avoid empty beaches at night.
Why is the murder rate in St Kitts so high?
Partly because the population is tiny. About 47,000 people live in the federation, so 28 killings in 2024 meant a rate near 60 per 100,000, while the 7 recorded in 2025 meant 13.6. The government credits a public health approach for the 2025 fall.
Is Nevis safer than St Kitts?
Nevis is quieter and has about a quarter of the population, but neither government advisory treats the islands differently, so the same precautions apply on both. Nevis has one public hospital, Alexandra Hospital in Charlestown, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says serious cases may need evacuation.
Do I need a permit to drive in St Kitts?
Yes. You need a local licence, sold by the Inland Revenue Department for EC$62.50 for 3 months or EC$125 for a year, and rental firms usually arrange it. Traffic drives on the left. Expect potholes, unmarked speed bumps, narrow rural roads and pedestrians walking on the road.
When is hurricane season in St Kitts and Nevis?
June to November, with the peak from August to October. Hurricane Georges hit the islands on 21 September 1998, killing 4 people. If you travel in season, buy insurance that covers cancellations and follow the National Emergency Management Agency and the US National Hurricane Center.
