Is TUIfly Nordic safe?
TUIfly Nordic
TUIfly Nordic, the Swedish TUI airline that started as Blue Scandinavia in 1996, has no recorded fatal accident or damaging accident. It flies three Boeing 737-8s and one 787-9 under Swedish and EASA oversight. It has no IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary, and its small size means its record rests on fewer flights.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Accident record40% of score
93 out of 100, ExcellentThe Aviation Safety Network data hold no accident for TUIfly Nordic or its earlier names, Blue Scandinavia and Britannia Nordic, since 1996. We stop short of the top band because the airline flies far fewer flights than a large carrier, about 1.5 million passengers a year.
Regulatory oversight20% of score
86 out of 100, ExcellentTUIfly Nordic AB holds a Swedish air operator certificate under EASA rules, and Sweden is in FAA IASAThe US FAA's check of whether a country's aviation regulator meets ICAO standards. Category 1 means it does; Category 2 means it does not.More in the glossary Category 1 (April 2025 list). It is not an IATA member, and TUI's 2025 annual report says only its German airline has IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary certification.
Fleet15% of score
88 out of 100, ExcellentThree Boeing 737-8s and one Boeing 787-9 in 2024 (Travel Extra); the 787-9 flew Gothenburg to Phuket charters in early 2026. The last 737-800 left in November 2021 (ch-aviation), so the whole fleet is new-generation. Much of the summer programme uses hired aircraft.
Serious incidents15% of score
84 out of 100, GoodWe found no serious incident in the last ten years and no Swedish investigation naming the airline. In January 2017 a 767 bound for Krabi turned back near Volgograd with a hydraulic fault that maintenance had worked on before departure. The record is thin for a small airline.
Operating environment10% of score
84 out of 100, GoodFlights from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki and smaller Swedish airports such as Luleå, Kalmar and Sundsvall to the Canaries, the Mediterranean and Thailand. Nordic winter operations with snow and ice are routine at well-equipped airports.
Is TUIfly Nordic safe?
Yes. In 30 years of flying Scandinavians to the sun, TUIfly Nordic has no recorded fatal accident and has never damaged an aircraft badly enough to appear in the Aviation Safety Network data. It flies only new-generation Boeings and works under Swedish oversight within the EU's EASA system. We score it 89, level with Norwegian and ahead of SAS.
Two things temper that. It has no IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary, the voluntary industry audit that its German sister TUIfly holds. And it is small: four aircraft and about 1.5 million passengers a year, so its clean record covers far fewer flights than a large airline's.
Which TUI airline is this?
This page covers TUIfly Nordic AB, based in Stockholm, with the code 6B. It began in 1996 as Blue Scandinavia, when the Swedish tour operator Fritidsresor took over the charter side of Transwede. It became Britannia Nordic after Thomson bought Fritidsresor in 1998 and took the TUIfly Nordic name in 2006.
It flies for TUI's tour operators in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, and since 2024 for TUI Ireland as well. TUI's other airlines hold their own certificates: TUI Airways in Britain, TUIfly in Germany, TUI fly Belgium and TUI fly Netherlands.
That split matters more here than for most airlines. With four aircraft of its own, TUIfly Nordic cannot fly a whole Nordic summer alone, so TUI hires aircraft with crews from other airlines. On those flights the other airline's certificate and record apply, even though the booking says TUI.
TUIfly Nordic's accident record
There is nothing to count. The Aviation Safety Network data hold no accident under the TUIfly Nordic, Britannia Nordic or Blue Scandinavia names, and none for the Swedish registrations we checked. Sweden's accident investigation authority, which publishes all its work, lists no investigation naming the airline.
The older Transwede did lose a Caravelle on take-off at Stockholm Arlanda in January 1987, with no deaths. That was before Blue Scandinavia existed, under a different company, and well outside our 20-year window.
Which incidents should passengers know about?
Few. The events reported in trade press are technical faults the crews handled:
- Near Volgograd, January 2017. A Boeing 767 flying from Luleå to Krabi in Thailand turned back to Stockholm with a hydraulic failure. It had left four hours late after engineers worked on a hydraulic problem, and the warning came back in flight. It landed safely about three hours after turning around.
- Alghero, August 2016. A 737-800 flew through a flock of birds after take-off for Oslo and bent fan blades in one engine. It returned and landed safely.
- Over Germany, July 2012. Radio contact with air traffic control was lost for about 27 minutes on a flight from Gothenburg to Palma, and the German air force sent two fighters to check on the 737.
The last two fall outside our ten-year incident window and do not lower the score.
How new is the TUIfly Nordic fleet?
New, and small. In 2024 the airline had three Boeing 737-8s and one Boeing 787-9. The last 737-800 left in November 2021, and the 767s and 757s went years before. In 2026 the 737-8s were flying new winter routes from Borlänge, Kalmar, Karlstad, Sundsvall and Växjö to Gran Canaria, and the 787-9 was flying Gothenburg to Phuket charters.
TUI does not publish a separate fleet count or age for the Swedish airline, so these figures come from trade press.
Tips for TUIfly Nordic passengers
- Look up the operating airline. On a TUI package from the Nordics, the booking may name another airline. That airline's record is the one that applies to your flight.
- Prepare for a long-haul night flight. Gothenburg to Phuket takes nearly 12 hours. Keep medicines and a change of clothes in your hand luggage in case of a technical return like the 2017 Krabi flight.
How we scored it
The accident record (93) is spotless but rests on a small number of flights. Swedish and EASA oversight without IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary scores 86. The fleet (88) is all new-generation, and incidents (84) are few, though the public record for an airline this size is thin. The network scores 84. The result is above TUI Airways, whose record includes a string of crew-caused incidents.
Questions people ask

Does TUIfly Nordic fly the Boeing 737 MAX?
Yes. Its short and medium-haul fleet is made up only of 737-8s, which TUI used to call the 737 MAX 8, since the last 737-800 left in 2021. See our 737 MAX page for the type's record.
Is TUIfly Nordic the same as TUIfly in Germany?
