Is NetShort safe?

NetShort

NetShort is a real app and we found no breach or regulator action, but it tracks more than any rival we checked, sells weekly plans from $5.99 to $29.99, and its terms bar under-18s while Apple rates it 13+. Disputes go to an arbitration body in Chongqing, China.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Privacy30% of score

    37 out of 100, Poor

Apple's label lists identifiers, usage data, diagnostics and other data as used to track you. Google Play's section says device IDs, approximate location and the list of installed apps are shared for advertising, and the policy names the Sensors Data analytics SDK.

  • Security30% of score

    47 out of 100, Weak

No breach of NetShort user data was found and Google Play says data is encrypted in transit. Payments run through Apple or Google. We found no two-step login or bug bounty, and the terms and policy still carry bracketed template text.

  • Transparency and control15% of score

    36 out of 100, Poor

The terms call subscription payments final and non-refundable, though a June 2026 recharge agreement promises to review refund requests in the app. Account closure is by contacting support, the privacy policy dates from September 2024, and disputes go to arbitration in Chongqing, China.

  • Scams and harmful content15% of score

    48 out of 100, Weak

Shows come from the studio, with no messaging between strangers. Apple rates the app 13+ and lists infrequent sexual content or nudity, mature themes, violence and drug references, while NetShort's own terms say the service is not for anyone under 18. There are no parental controls.

  • Regulatory record10% of score

    88 out of 100, Excellent

We found no privacy or consumer-protection fine or order against NetShort or NETSTORY at the EU, the UK Advertising Standards Authority or in public reporting. Few regulators have looked at short-drama apps yet.

Is NetShort safe?

NetShort will not infect your phone and nobody can message you on it, but it is one of the more data-hungry and expensive ways to watch short dramas. We score it 47/100, level with DramaBox (47) and below ReelShort (51). The three things that pull it down: ad tracking that goes further than its rivals, weekly VIP plans that reach $29.99, and terms that put any dispute in front of an arbitration body in China.

It is also one of the most widely used apps in the genre. NetShort sat at No. 24 in Apple's US entertainment chart when we checked in October 2026, with 4.7 stars from about 232,000 ratings, and Google Play counts more than 100 million downloads.

How much NetShort costs

The model is the usual one. A few episodes are free, each series runs to dozens of one-minute episodes, and the rest unlock with points, rewarded ads or a VIP plan. The US App Store lists eight weekly VIP prices, from $5.99 to $29.99, plus one-time purchases of $9.99 and $19.99. The listing says a plan renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.

At $19.99 a week, a forgotten plan costs about $1,040 a year. Several reviews on the App Store make the same complaint: the free part ends quickly, and one reviewer wrote that the wording made the weekly plan look like a free trial. Those are customers' accounts, not findings by a regulator.

NetShort's documents disagree with each other on refunds. The user agreement says subscription payments "are final and non-refundable" and that wrong charges must be reported within 30 days. The recharge agreement, updated in June 2026, says refunds "will not be entertained unless the product/service is unusable", and then describes a refund process through Me and Contact Us with a reply promised within 24 hours. Use that process, and if you paid through Apple or Google, ask the store too.

What NetShort tracks

This is NetShort's weakest area. Its Apple label puts four categories under "Data Used to Track You": identifiers, usage data, diagnostics and other data. That is broader than ReelShort, DramaBox or GoodShort. The same data is linked to your identity and used for third-party advertising, analytics and personalisation.

Google Play's data safety section goes further. It says NetShort may share user IDs, device IDs, approximate location, app interactions and the list of apps installed on your phone with other companies, the last three for advertising among other purposes.

The privacy policy, dated 11 September 2024, fills in the rest. Advertising partners may set their own tracking tools in the app and collect your advertising ID (IDFA or GAID). Usage statistics go through Google Analytics and the Sensors Data SDK, which collects device identifiers such as the Android ID, IDFA and IDFV. NetShort says it does not sell personal information. The policy does not say in which country data is stored.

The fine print points to China

NETSTORY PTE. LTD. is registered in Singapore, at an industrial estate address in Woodlands. But its user agreement says disputes that cannot be settled by negotiation go to the China Chongqing Arbitration Commission. For a viewer in the US or Europe, that makes any formal complaint against the company slow and costly. The same agreement still shows its update date in brackets, "[June 21th, 2024]", and names the company as "NETSTORY PTE.LTD., Inc.", signs of a template that was never cleaned up.

The privacy policy describes no delete button in the app: you "deactivate" your account by contacting NetShort. Google Play says you can request deletion.

Is NetShort OK for teenagers?

Not by NetShort's own rules. The terms say the service "is strictly for consumers and not for use by users under 18 years of age", and the privacy policy says the same. Apple still rates the app 13+, listing infrequent sexual content or nudity, mature or suggestive themes, realistic violence and drug references. Google Play rates it Teen. Featured series include mafia romances and werewolf "true bride" plots. There is no kids profile and no purchase PIN in the app.

FlickReels and ReelyGo

Two smaller apps from Singapore companies work much the same way. Both listings use the same layout of coin packs ("pay $4.99", "pay $9.99") and both declare contests.

FlickReels, from FARSUN PTE. LTD., markets AI-generated stories and an "AI co-creation" feature. Apple rates it 13+ and lists user-generated content and social media features, so it carries more contact risk than NetShort. Weekly memberships cost $12.99 to $19.99 and monthly ones $25.99 to $39.99. Its label lists identifiers as used to track you and nothing as linked to you.

ReelyGo, from TITIAN PTE. LTD., is rated 18+ for frequent sexual content or nudity. It sells weekly VIP plans at $12.99 to $19.99, a monthly plan at $39.99 and a yearly plan at $149.99. Its label matches FlickReels. We score FlickReels separately (45); ReelyGo has no page of its own.

How to watch NetShort more safely

  1. Check the purchase screen for the word "weekly" before you tap. Most NetShort plans renew every seven days.
  2. Tap "Ask App Not to Track" on an iPhone. On Android, delete or reset your advertising ID in the phone's privacy settings.
  3. Cancel in the App Store or Google Play subscription settings at least a day before renewal.
  4. On a teenager's phone, turn on Ask to Buy or Google Family Link purchase approval. The store ratings will not block the app.
  5. Ask for a refund through Me, then Contact Us, and through the store, soon after an unwanted charge.

How we scored it

Regulatory record (88) is NetShort's strongest factor, since we found no fine or order; it stays below 90 because few regulators have examined short-drama apps. Transparency and control (36) is the weakest, driven by contradictory refund rules, deletion by email and arbitration in China. Privacy (37) reflects the widest tracking declaration we have seen in the genre, including installed-apps sharing on Android.

Questions people ask

Is NetShort legit or a scam?

NetShort is a real app from NETSTORY PTE. LTD. in Singapore, with more than 100 million Google Play downloads, and the episodes you pay for do play. The complaints are about price. Weekly VIP plans on the US App Store run up to $29.99, and a plan left running renews every seven days until you cancel it.

How do I cancel NetShort VIP?

If you paid through Apple or Google, cancel in your phone's subscription settings, not by deleting the app. NetShort's recharge agreement also describes a cancel option on the Me page for plans bought directly. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date, or the next week is charged.

Can I get a refund from NetShort?

NetShort's terms say subscription payments are final and non-refundable, but its June 2026 recharge agreement says refund requests sent through Me, then Contact Us, get a reply within 24 hours. For App Store or Google Play purchases you can also ask the store directly. The terms set a 30-day limit for reporting a wrong charge.

Is NetShort OK for kids?

No. Apple rates it 13+ and Google Play rates it Teen, but NetShort's own terms and privacy policy say the service is not for anyone under 18. Apple lists sexual content or nudity among its themes, and the app has no kids mode or parental PIN.

Is NetShort Chinese?

The operator, NETSTORY PTE. LTD., is registered in Singapore. Its terms of use, however, send disputes that cannot be settled by negotiation to the China Chongqing Arbitration Commission, which points to a link with mainland China. The privacy policy does not say where user data is stored.
