StoryReel

StoryReel launched in April 2026 and reached the top five of Apple's US entertainment chart. We found no breach or regulator action, but weekly passes cost up to $24.99, renewals are not refunded, and Google Play rates it Teen while Apple and its terms say 18+.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Privacy30% of score

    44 out of 100, Weak

Apple's label lists identifiers as used to track you and user content and device IDs as linked to you. The September 2026 policy says StoryReel serves tailored ads outside the app using data from third parties, and Google Play says device IDs are shared for advertising.

  • Security30% of score

    46 out of 100, Weak

No breach of StoryReel user data was found and Google Play says data is encrypted in transit. The privacy policy lists only generic measures such as access control and an incident team, with no mention of encryption; the app is six months old, and we found no two-step login or bug bounty.

  • Transparency and control15% of score

    36 out of 100, Poor

The store listing says there is no refund once a renewal succeeds. The privacy policy describes no way to delete your account, although Google Play says you can request deletion. Disputes go to arbitration in Hong Kong with a class-action waiver.

  • Scams and harmful content15% of score

    44 out of 100, Weak

Apple rates StoryReel 18+ for frequent mature or suggestive themes and infrequent sexual content or nudity, and the terms require users to be 18. Google Play rates the same app Teen, and the terms also say minors may use it under adult supervision. No parental controls.

  • Regulatory record10% of score

    86 out of 100, Excellent

We found no privacy or consumer-protection fine or order against StoryReel or Equinox Enterprises Technology. The app is young and no regulator appears to have examined it.

Is StoryReel safe?

StoryReel is a real app with no reported breach, but it is a costly one and the company behind it is new and says little about itself. We score it 48/100, a point above NetShort (47) and DramaBox (47), and below ReelShort (51). It tracks somewhat less than NetShort. Against that, it is only six months old, its privacy policy is short on detail and its renewals are not refunded.

It has grown quickly. StoryReel appeared on the US App Store on 8 April 2026 and stood at No. 5 in the entertainment chart when we checked in October, with 4.8 stars from about 54,000 ratings. Google Play lists more than 10 million downloads and a lower 4.4 stars.

Who runs StoryReel

The operator is Equinox Enterprises Technology Ltd., which gives an office address in North Point, Hong Kong, in both its terms and privacy policy. Its terms are governed by Hong Kong law. Any dispute goes to binding arbitration at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, in English, and you waive the right to join a class action. For someone in the US or Europe, that rules out small-claims court and makes a formal complaint expensive.

The privacy policy says the service's data is stored in the United States.

What a Weekly Pass Pro costs

StoryReel sells coins to unlock episodes and a subscription called Weekly Pass Pro, which unlocks everything and removes most ads. The US App Store lists it at eight prices from $7.99 to $24.99, most often $19.99. The listing also mentions an Annual Pass Pro.

The app's own listing is blunt: subscriptions renew 24 hours before the period ends, and "there is no refund when the renewal is successful." It also opens its payment rules by saying subscribing "does not affect the normal use of the APP", which is hard to square with series where the free episodes run out after a few minutes. At $19.99 a week, a pass left running costs about $1,040 a year.

What StoryReel collects

StoryReel's Apple label is lighter than NetShort's. Only identifiers are used to track you across other companies' apps. Device IDs and user content (photos or videos, and customer support messages) are linked to you. Coarse location, search history, usage data and diagnostics are collected without being linked to your identity.

The privacy policy, updated on 10 September 2026, adds detail on ads. With your consent, StoryReel uses the GAID or IDFA advertising ID for personalised ads, and it serves "tailored advertising outside of our Service" based on your activity and on data received from third parties. Google Play's section says device IDs are shared with other companies for analytics, advertising and personalisation.

What the policy leaves out matters as much. It has no section on children, no list of retention periods and no description of how to delete your account. The terms say the policy covers your "right to access, correct and delete" data, but the policy itself does not explain how. Google Play says the developer offers a way to request deletion.

Is StoryReel OK for teenagers?

Apple rates StoryReel 18+ for frequent mature or suggestive themes, with infrequent sexual content or nudity, violence, profanity and weapons. The terms say users must be at least 18. That is more consistent than ReelShort, which is rated 13+ against an 18+ contract. But Google Play rates the Android version Teen, and the same terms also say "minors may only access the service under the supervision of an adult". There is no kids profile or content filter.

VibeShort and BlinkDrama

Two newer apps from other Hong Kong companies follow StoryReel's model closely. Both sell a subscription with the same name, Weekly Pass Pro, both have a $3.49 one-time purchase, and both carry nearly the same Apple label. We found no public record that the three share an owner.

VibeShort, from Agile Quadrant Media Limited, launched in February 2026 and sells AI-generated short dramas and comic-style stories. Apple rates it 18+ for frequent mature themes. Weekly Pass Pro costs $4.99 to $19.99. Its label is the same as StoryReel's: identifiers used to track you, user content and identifiers linked to you. Its privacy policy refers to Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.

BlinkDrama, from Atlas Ventures Culture & Technology Limited in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, reached the US App Store in May 2026 and was No. 6 in entertainment in October. It is rated 18+. Its listing states a $19.99 weekly pass that renews at $19.99 a week and an annual pass at $149.99. Its label lists identifiers as the only data used to track you or linked to you. We score both separately: VibeShort (48) and BlinkDrama (47).

How to keep StoryReel from costing too much

  1. Cancel the pass right after you buy it if you only want one week. You keep access until the week ends, and nothing renews.
  2. Never rely on a renewal refund: the listing rules it out. Ask Apple or Google instead if a charge was a mistake.
  3. Turn off tracking for the app on an iPhone, and reset your advertising ID on Android.
  4. On a child's Android phone, set an age limit in Google Family Link below the Teen rating, or require purchase approval.
  5. To delete your data, write to the support address in the app and ask for account deletion in writing.

How we scored it

Regulatory record (86) is StoryReel's best factor; it sits below ReelShort's 88 because the app is six months old and no regulator has looked at it. Transparency and control (36) is the weakest, for the no-refund renewal rule, the missing deletion procedure and Hong Kong arbitration. Privacy (44) reflects off-app ad targeting with third-party data, slightly better than NetShort's broader tracking.

Questions people ask

Is StoryReel legit?

Yes, it is a real streaming app with more than 10 million Google Play downloads, run by Equinox Enterprises Technology Ltd. in Hong Kong. Episodes you unlock do play. The common complaints are about the price of the weekly pass and about renewals, which the listing says are not refunded.

How much is StoryReel Weekly Pass Pro?

On the US App Store, Weekly Pass Pro is listed at prices from $7.99 to $24.99, with $19.99 the most common. It renews every seven days until you cancel. The listing also mentions an Annual Pass Pro, and one-time coin purchases cost $3.49 or $19.99.

How do I cancel StoryReel?

The App Store listing describes a path inside the app, through your avatar, Payment and Subscription, then Subscription. If you paid through Apple or Google, the store's own subscription settings work too. Cancel more than 24 hours before the renewal, because a renewal that goes through is not refunded.

Is StoryReel OK for teenagers?

No. Apple rates StoryReel 18+ for frequent mature or suggestive themes, and the terms say users must be at least 18. Google Play rates the Android version Teen, so a parent relying on Play's rating would get no warning. There is no kids mode.

Where does StoryReel store my data?

The privacy policy, last updated on 10 September 2026, says data from the service is stored in the United States and that you allow it to be transferred across borders. The company itself is registered in North Point, Hong Kong.
