Is DramaBox safe?

DramaBox

DramaBox is a real streaming app, not a scam, and we found no fine against it. It scores lower than ReelShort because it tracks more, shares your installed-apps list with Google's ad network, and gives conflicting age limits. Its fees are non-refundable and its privacy policy still contains unfilled template text.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Privacy30% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

Apple's label lists identifiers and usage data as used to track you, and purchases, search and browsing history linked to you. The policy says DramaBox shares your installed-apps list with AdMob and may read the clipboard for referral codes.

  • Security30% of score

    48 out of 100, Weak

We found no reported breach and Google Play says data is encrypted in transit. But the security section of the privacy policy still reads "such as [encryption and desensitization]" in template brackets, and we found no Two-factor authenticationSigning in with a second proof of identity on top of your password, such as a code from an app, a security key or a passkey.More in the glossary login or bug bounty.

  • Transparency and control15% of score

    35 out of 100, Poor

The terms say all fees are non-refundable and were written for a platform of literary works. The July 2026 privacy policy says DramaBox may share data with ad partners and, later, that it does not. Account and watch-history deletion are in the app.

  • Scams and harmful content15% of score

    42 out of 100, Weak

Apple rates DramaBox 18+ for frequent mature or suggestive themes. Google Play rates it Teen and the terms allow users from age 12. The app has little contact with strangers but contains ads.

  • Regulatory record10% of score

    88 out of 100, Excellent

We found no privacy or consumer-protection fine, order or lawsuit against DramaBox or StoryMatrix. Few regulators have looked at short-drama apps so far.

Is DramaBox safe?

DramaBox works as advertised and we found no regulator action against it, but it is a weaker app than its main rival ReelShort on almost every point we measure. It tracks more, shares more with advertisers, its age ratings contradict each other, and its legal documents look unfinished. We score it 47/100.

DramaBox is published by StoryMatrix Pte. Ltd., registered in Singapore, which says it stores user data on servers there. KrASIA reported that DramaBox and ReelShort each hold close to 30% of the short-drama market outside China.

What DramaBox costs

The US App Store lists memberships from $5.99 to $19.99 and "special offers" from $4.99 to $19.99. Episodes are short and series are long, and the free ones run out at a cliffhanger. DramaBox also sells coins, which its terms say can be used only inside the app and cannot be exchanged for money.

The terms are short on consumer rights. "All fees are in U.S. dollars and are non-refundable", and disputes go to binding arbitration in Singapore. The document describes DramaBox as a platform "for writers and publishers to distribute and monetize various literary works", which suggests it was copied from a reading app and never fully adapted to video.

Apple's guideline 3.1.2 sets seven days as the shortest subscription period and says apps that trick users into subscribing under false pretenses will be removed. Short-drama apps sit right on that minimum: several of the rivals below sell weekly plans at $19.99, which comes to about $1,000 a year if nobody cancels.

The privacy policy problem

DramaBox's privacy policy, dated 18 July 2026, has passages still in template brackets. Its security section says the company uses measures "such as [encryption and desensitization]". The sharing section reads "we share [list of applications installed on your device] with AdMob", Google's ad network. Deletion paths are also in brackets.

The content behind those brackets is the bigger issue. With your consent, the app reads the list of apps on your phone for advertising. It may read your clipboard when the text looks like a referral code or campaign link. In its California section it says it does not sell data but may "share" device identifiers and browsing data with ad partners, then a few lines later says it does not sell or share personal information under that law.

Apple's label backs up the broad picture: identifiers and usage data are used to track you across other companies' apps, and purchases, search history, browsing history, user content and identifiers are linked to you. Google Play's data safety section says photos and videos, device IDs and app interactions may be shared with other companies.

Is DramaBox OK for teenagers?

That depends on which rating you believe. Apple rates it 18+ and lists frequent mature or suggestive themes. Google Play rates the same app Teen. DramaBox's terms set the minimum age at 12. App Store events promote series like "Fling With My Bestie's Dad". If a child under 18 uses it on Android, nothing in the store rating will warn a parent.

StoryReel and GoodShort

Two newer rivals work the same way, and each now has its own page. StoryReel, from Equinox Enterprises Technology Limited, appeared on the US App Store in April 2026. Apple rates it 18+ for frequent mature themes, and its "Weekly Pass Pro" costs $7.99 to $24.99. We score it 48/100.

GoodShort, from Singapore New Reading Technology, is rated 13+ and sells coins alongside weekly VIP plans. Its Apple label is the lightest of the group, with identifiers used for tracking and nothing else linked to you, and we score it 52/100. DramaWave (48) and NetShort (47) have their own pages too.

How to use DramaBox more safely

  1. Pay only through the App Store or Google Play, so the store's refund process applies.
  2. Read the billing period on the purchase screen. Many plans renew weekly.
  3. Deny the installed-apps permission if the app asks, and clear your clipboard before opening it.
  4. On a child's Android phone, set Google Family Link to require approval for purchases, since the Play rating will not block it.
  5. Cancel in your store account, then delete your DramaBox account in the app's profile settings.

How we scored it

Regulatory record (88) is DramaBox's strongest factor, because we found no fine or consumer case; it stays below 90 because few regulators have looked at short-drama apps yet. Transparency and control (35) is the weakest, driven by non-refundable fees, terms written for a different product and a contradictory privacy policy. Privacy (40) reflects ad tracking and installed-apps sharing. Compare Netflix for a streaming app with clearer terms.

Questions people ask

Is DramaBox legit?

Yes, in the sense that it is a real app with more than 100 million Google Play downloads and the episodes you pay for play. KrASIA reported that it earned about $120 million from in-app purchases in the first quarter of 2025. The complaints are about price and billing, not fraud.

Can I get a refund from DramaBox?

DramaBox's terms say all fees are non-refundable. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, ask Apple or Google instead from your purchase history. They apply their own refund rules, which DramaBox's terms do not override.

Why is DramaBox rated 18+?

Apple's rating lists frequent mature or suggestive themes, plus infrequent violence, profanity and weapons. Many featured series are adult romances. Google Play rates the same app Teen, and DramaBox's terms allow users from age 12, so the ratings and the contract do not agree.

Does DramaBox read my clipboard?

Its privacy policy says the app may read text on your clipboard only when it matches formats such as referral codes or campaign links, for advertising attribution. Clear the clipboard before opening the app if you have copied something private, like a password.

How do I delete my DramaBox account?

The privacy policy says the app has a built-in account deletion option under the profile settings, and watch history can be deleted from the profile page. Cancel any subscription in your Apple or Google account first, because deleting the account does not stop store billing.
