Is Ocho Rios safe?
Ocho Rios
Ocho Rios is a cruise port and resort town where most visitors see Dunn's River Falls, a beach and their hotel, and rarely any crime. St Ann's murders fell 36% in 2026 to late October, but the parish rate is still about 22 per 100,000, break-ins rose, and the usual advice not to walk at night applies.

Is Ocho Rios safe?
For a resort stay or a cruise day, it usually is. Ocho Rios is Jamaica's main cruise port on the north coast and a short ride from Dunn's River Falls, and most visitors move between the pier, a beach, an excursion and a guarded hotel without any trouble.
The crime numbers are improving fast. The Jamaica Constabulary Force counted 32 murders in St Ann, the parish around Ocho Rios, from 1 January to 24 October 2026, down from 50 a year earlier, and shootings fell from 30 to 12. On the parish's population of about 175,000, that still works out at about 22 murders per 100,000 a year, close to Jamaica's national rate and high by world standards. We score Ocho Rios 44, a point above Negril and four above Montego Bay.
Crime in and around the town
Most of St Ann's violence happens in communities away from the coast. The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary, updated on 23 June 2026, names one place in the parish where visitors should reconsider travel: Steer Town, an inland community with nothing to see. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary's list of places to be careful in Jamaica does not include Ocho Rios.
The crime that does reach visitors is theft and burglary. Robbery in St Ann halved in 2026 to late October, to 26 cases, but break-ins rose 16% to 79. The FCDO says robbery is the motive for most attacks on tourists and that burglaries happen at resorts as well as rentals. Lock doors and windows, use the safe, and choose a hotel or villa with a guard if you are not in an all-inclusive.
The FCDO and Canada both report sexual assaults on visitors, including at resorts, often by someone met socially at a bar, beach or excursion. Canada adds reports of assaults by resort staff. Do not give new acquaintances your room number, and arrange your own transport back.
Cruise days, hustlers and the falls
Ocho Rios changes character when ships are in. Main Street and the craft market fill with passengers, and the pier exit is where unlicensed guides, taxi touts and drug sellers wait. It is a nuisance more than a danger. Say no once, clearly, and keep walking.
A few practical points:
- Book excursions through the ship or a licensed operator, and agree taxi fares before getting in.
- Use only taxis with a blue Jamaica Tourist Board sticker on the windscreen.
- Do not buy or carry ganja back to the ship. Canada says departing cruise passengers may be searched for drugs, and Jamaica's penalties for trafficking are severe.
- At Dunn's River Falls, wear water shoes, follow the guide's chain and keep valuables in a waterproof pouch.
After dark
Ocho Rios has bars and restaurants along the coast road and in the hotels, but it is a quieter town at night than Negril. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against walking at night anywhere in Jamaica and on deserted beaches even in daytime, and says not to use buses after dark. Take a licensed taxi even for short trips between your hotel and a restaurant, and use ATMs inside hotels or banks, in daylight.
Hospitals, storms and roads
St Ann was on the edge of Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. The National Hurricane Center measured gusts of 90 knots at Bamboo in the parish and 57 knots at Dunn's River, but the extreme damage was in the south-west. The cruise pier took its first passenger ships after the storm on 11 November 2025. Hurricane season runs from June to November, and Jamaica also lies in an earthquake zone.
Medical care is the usual Jamaican story. The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary says emergency response is slower than at home, ambulances are not always staffed or available and private hospitals want payment before admission. Bring all your medicines, and buy insurance with air evacuation: the State Department puts the minimum cost of an air ambulance to the US at about US$30,000.
Most visitors arrive by road from Montego Bay along the A1 coast road, or from Kingston on the toll highway over the mountains. Jamaica's police counted 374 road deaths in 2025, about 13 per 100,000 people, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary describes speeding, drink-driving and poor lane discipline. Use a resort transfer, avoid route taxis and do not drive between towns at night, which US government staff may not do.
How we scored it
Night safety (38) is Ocho Rios's weakest factor, reflecting official advice not to walk after dark. Violent crime (40) reflects a parish murder rate of about 22 per 100,000, falling fast. Health and environment (50) is the strongest, because the north coast escaped the worst of Melissa. The weighted average of 44 is far below the cap of 110 set by Jamaica's conflict score of 75.
Questions people ask
Is Ocho Rios safe for cruise passengers?
Yes, for a day ashore with ordinary care. The risk is hassle rather than violence. Expect offers of tours, taxis and ganja as soon as you leave the pier. Book excursions through the ship or a licensed operator, use taxis with a blue Jamaica Tourist Board sticker, and be back on board in good time. Canada says departing cruise passengers may be searched for drugs.
Is Dunn's River Falls safe?
The climb is safe for most fit people with a guide, but the rocks are slippery and crowded on cruise days. Wear water shoes with grip, keep hold of the human chain the guides form, and leave phones and cash in a locker or waterproof pouch.
Is Ocho Rios safer than Montego Bay?
On the 2026 numbers, yes. St Ann had about 22 murders per 100,000 at its 2026 pace, against about 35 in St James around Montego Bay, and its shootings fell by 60%. For a visitor who stays in a resort, the day-to-day risk in both is low, and the same rules about taxis and night walking apply.
Which areas near Ocho Rios should I avoid?
The US asks visitors to reconsider travel to Steer Town in St Ann, an inland community with no tourist sights. In town, stay on Main Street, the beaches and the hotel strip, and avoid back streets and the hills behind the town on foot, especially after dark.
